US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

  • #21
I was wondering if that is what the "20 days" is about. See how they go with Venezuela, and if the world doesn't kick up too much of a fuss then go for Greenland.

"Let's talk about Greenland in 20 days," Mr Trump said on Sunday

And that makes it legal? Declaring that no one will fight over Greenland?

To date, at least 115 Venezuelans have been killed by the US military forces in 2025.

Is Europe going to ignore the unjustified deaths of a similar number of Greenlanders, without any action?

The United States needs to take care of the Veterans it already has, not create more. IMO.

As soon as the US government threatened Canada and the Panama Canal, it was obvious that the US wants full control and authority over global trade routes and shipping lanes. The US wants to be the middle-man with global trade, to take a tax on all goods that move between borders.

The reason that the US wants Canada and Greenland is here (see illustration). The red route borders Russia, the green route borders Canada and Greenland. The blue route does not yet exist.

The US currently has no impactful authority or significant border in the Arctic region. The US is threatened because other countries, such as Canada, can establish major trade routes East and West that bypass the US. South America has already established trade routes that bypass the US (e.g.: China via Peru shipping ports).

Although the US appears to be bankrupt and unable to purchase natural resources from sovereign countries, such as Greenland and Venezuela, that is not primary reason for the US attempting to seize sovereign nations. The primary reason appears to be control of global trade routes.

Venezuela is the point of access from the US to South America, Greenland is the centre of trade from Canada to all points East. The US needs Greenland to be a major player in the Arctic region.

The US recognizes that other countries can and will bypass US trade relationships (due to tariff taxes). The only way for the US to remain relevant is to so seize strategically located sovereign nations, to control trade routes, to impose transport tax ... and the bonus is that the US can steal, rather than purchase, natural resources from sovereign nations.

This is about the Transpolar Sea Route in the Arctic.

Russia, China and Canada also have interest in this region for shipping.

The first link explains things in detail. The other 3 links are just added for context. MOO

Transpolar Sea Route (yellow route): does not exist, melt may open the route in 2050. Northwest Passage green, and Russian purple, routes are used today.

Russia is the largest country in the world, Canada is second, US is fourth. The current US government wants to expand territory, presumably to be Bigger and Biggest.

What would happen if NATO closed all US military bases? That is a consequence of destroying NATO. It could be interpreted in many ways, but I think the US would lose status globally, especially with China and Russia.

"European leaders, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friederich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have been trying to emphasize diplomacy, in an effort to convince Trump that he can achieve all his political goals without physically taking over Greenland and destroying the NATO alliance.

"I think we're starting to see that this is not really about either national security, international security or resources."

"I think it's about Trump's legacy. I think it's about him wanting to expand American territory."
...

"It would mean the end of NATO," said Kerry Buck, a former Canadian ambassador to NATO between 2015 and 2019.
...

European leaders have repeatedly told Trump that the current arrangement with Denmark gives the U.S. military freedom to use the island more or less as it wishes.
...

"If you take it, we will take every single base of the Americans, from Aviano from Ramstein, from Romania to all the other military bases — [they] will be confiscated, you will lose it — if you take Greenland," Gunther Fehlinger, chairman of the Austrian Committee for NATO Enlargement, said in a podcast."

"The situation has now become so legitimate that soldiers on the ground have reportedly been told to essentially “shoot first and ask questions later.”

Denmark, which retains control of Greenland’s defence and foreign policy, has a rule for moments when there is no time to think. Written in 1952 at the height of Cold War anxiety, it instructs Danish forces that if the country is attacked, they must respond immediately — without waiting for orders, even if political leaders are unaware a war has begun.

The Danish defence ministry confirmed this week that the rule remains in force."

The Danish strategy, more or less explicit in public statements, is to seek dialogue with those members of the Trump administration they consider more pragmatic. One of them, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, announced Wednesday that he would accept a meeting with his Danish counterparts, perhaps next week.

Just an opinion ...

What the global community is seeing in and of the US is that no one, at any level of government or community, has held the elected federal government accountable during the past year. Therefore, the US government believes itself to be entitled to now take that uncontested disregard for the constitution, national law, and state/civic governance to the international level. That was initiated with the release of the National Security Strategy in November 2025; based on policy written in 1823: Monroe Doctrine.

Months ago, it was obvious that the US federal government was running around kicking at civil rights, free speech, human rights, health care, education autonomy, and more, to test whether politicians or civilians would intervene and say no. No one did anything.

A protest about "no kings" missed the mark. Today, kings are not autocrats, authoritarians, or dictators. Kings uphold traditional, cultural, humanitarian, and environmental, values. "Kings" is the wrong word. The belligerence with which the US acts today is ~ in my opinion ~ with the same determination as historic authoritarian dictators who wanted global domination (e.g.: you know their names).

The US government has now turned to the international community with the same defiance, and is kicking at China and Russia to test whether those countries will react.

Kidnapping a foreign leader in Venezuela is the US government's first strike at asserting authority on the global stage. It is meant to go under the radar, because that foreign leader has a poor human rights record. Some will agree with the kidnapping, regardless of international law, based on the history of that particular foreign leader. It is the beginning, where the next assault against a sovereign nation will not be justified by human rights violations - but the precedent will be set.

Other South American countries will allow the US government to interfere with their governments to avoid military kidnapping. Colombia is already asking the US what they want.

Seizing Venezuelan oil that is intended for China is testing China. Seizing empty ships in the North Atlantic Ocean that travel under the Russia flag is testing Russia.

Next step is to seize Arctic Shipping Lanes: the Northwest Passage and Northeast Passage, with the aim to control the future Transpolar Sea Route (still frozen). This step is kicking at NATO, the EU, and Canada. The US waged Economic War against Canada in early 2025 (ongoing), and has stated the intent to wage Military War against the Kingdom of Denmark and claim Greenland.

Because all levels of US society and government have failed to hold their elected government accountable, it is now the responsibility of the global community to respond. It is now at the serious level where aggression against Greenland will result in destroying NATO (Article 5). The US is threatening to wage war against NATO, so US troops in NATO countries will be expelled. US military presence will be diminished. Global power will shift, but there is no guarantee that the US will land on top. In fact, the track record for the US president's business ventures suggests that failure is more likely.
