Her clothes look real dirty and have holes in them. I think most definitely homeless, it's possible her family hasn't reported her missing.
I agree the tattoo just doesn't looked done to me. It looks like there should be more to the peace sign.

Idk guys, the more I look at AK's hairline the less I think she's our train jane.

The other thing about AK is that we have to assume that somehow in between fleeing rehab, getting across the country, and ending up on the train, she had the time and resources to get that tattoo done.

FWIW, my sister (who is lurking here but not ready to post!) has several tattoos herself and thinks that our UID's tat is lower quality and not some large piece that's partially finished.

I think we should break down what we know about this girl and what that might mean. My thoughts:

Blonde, blue eyes, average height and height, 18-40 (I think we all agree she's closer to 18-25 or so)

Teeth are slightly crooked, discovered, with one chip, and one baby tooth (poor dental hygiene, genetics, drug use, lack of resources for ongoing dental care, or some combination of these)

Bad skin (acne, wind/sun/cold damage, picking due to meth or simply an OCD-type issue, some or all of the above)

Unshaven legs (no time, no resources, hippie, lesbian, didn't like to shave)

Pubic hair (sorry to be graphic, but all this means is that she had some, not that it was wildly long. All it means is that she didn't have a Brazilian wax)

Tattoo: peace sign with Reggae colors (hippie, marijuana user, enjoys reggae music). Not of particularly good quality, but large (someone guessed the cost for this would be about $500--is this correct?). If she was recently homeless, she got the tattoo before that, I would think. But if she's a recent runaway or other person on our list of possible matches, she had to have gotten it after she disappeared.

One piercing in each ear, no earrings

No shoes (liked to walk barefoot, shoes were stolen, shoes fell off while getting on train, shoes fell off while on train. Also no socks, so if we're thinking the shoes fell off, they were probably flip flops or flats)

Clothing
Old Navy, Infamous (inexpensive clothing readily available at chain stores. The Infamous brand is sold throughout the US, including SoCal and Vegas. Dark colors hide dirt more easily. Shirt looks baggy. These are not stereotypically fashionable clothes, but they're not really slovenly either. They blend in.)

Jewelry
Black metal ring. Looks like a man's band. (Worn for style or for sentimental reasons--perhaps belonged to a friend, lover, father, etc. If worn on middle finger, could be sign of asexuality.)

Black bracelet (Plastic, inexpensive. Seems like an odd thing to wear for style. Did it have some sort of meaning to her?)

COD
Suspected hypothermia/exposure
Tox screen not back yet

Nothing else on train with her. No bag, cigs, phone, drug paraphernalia, other clothing, pieces of paper, money, wallet, etc. (She didn't have any, she dropped it getting on train, it was stolen from train, it fell off the train)

What am I missing?

Respectfully, I don't think that tattoo cost $500. The work isn't great so I wouldn't be surprised if she went to a cheaper place or if a friend did it. I do believe it is complete and that is the look the artist was going for. I have small tattoos that were $60 to large that were between $400-600. I'm just not seeing a $500 tattoo.

As for the shirt, it's a mens shirt so it could be a hand me down, borrowed from a lover/family member or maybe even purchased at a thrift shop.

I would love to know about the condition of her feet. If she were walking barefoot, her feet would show the damage.

Just brainstorming here on this completely. I am a female in my 20s and I have a medical condition I didnt get until my mid 20s the longer time goes since my first symptoms the more challenging life gets. I shave but I dont do it regularly if I dont have to for the simple fact it really hurts. I wonder if she had a medical issue which lead to drug use and after a tolerance was built up with one drug another one was added. Something had to have suddenly happened to cause this woman to suddenly leave where ever her location was to begin with. I just dont foresee someone who is homeless wanting to travel North in the winter with out warm clothing unless she was heading to meet someone. And if your bad into drugs dont you sell or pawn everything you have too why would she still have that ring? Sorry I have a lot of random stuff with this post.

Agreed on all points.

I'd like to know what metal that ring is made from, its size, and its estimated value.

From the looks of the ring I don't believe it was of much, if any, value.

About the no shoes issue, you really should add that she may have removed them as a result of paradoxical undressing due to hypothermia.

How about this for an idea. She's tripping on something or smoking pot. The train isn't moving, maybe this is while it is parked at the start of its journey. She doesn't think the train is going to start moving, or thinks that if it did it would be easy enough to get off because freight trains take a while to get going. She decides to climb up, lay down and look at the clouds to enhance her drug experience. She leaves her bag, jacket and shoes behind right next to the train... maybe the shoes are flip flops and not that great for climbing, maybe she doesn't want to get her jacket dirty, maybe the sun is warm even if the air is a little chill. She falls asleep up there. The train starts moving. By the time she wakes up she's very chilled and the train is going too fast to easily jump off. She decides to tough it out until the train stops somewhere. She falls alseep again, never wakes.

I like the idea that her stuff could be back at the Vegas train yard or strewn along the train tracks between Vegas and Utah.

ETA: I was looking at her clothing again, have you noticed that her clothes matched. That seems odd to me for some reason if she is homeless or a transient.

I just emailed Sgt. W.:

"What were her feet like -- do they imply she was barefoot before boarding the train or with socks/shoes?

Did the autopsy reveal any stomach contents?

No tox report yet, right?

Happy Valentine's Day!!"

Will let y'all know.

From the looks of the ring I don't believe it was of much, if any, value.

It honestly looks like a ring one would acquire at a store that sells those Infamous shirts. Probably 5-10$ at best.

Hi all - i'm new, so please be gentle :).

Has anyone looked into Kayla Croft-Payne? It lists her hair as black, but in some of the photos it doesn't appear that black was her natural color. It also look's like she was removing her brows and drawing them in, but in the color photo they look pretty light. I thought the first two photos in the Namus profile bore a pretty striking similarity to our girl.

Her teeth look okay but there's one photo where you can just barely see that her bottom teeth are crooked.

She also strikes me as a possibility because the report mentions that she's a transient.

Probably a long shot but she caught my eye.

IMO her nose is too broad, but, you never know!

Here is some interesting info about Kayla. It does say that she has had a child. But I think the circumstances are interesting. In any case, I think this the type of person and scenario we might be looking for.

http://www.lewiscountysirens.com/?p=5546

She was raised by her mother in Centralia and Chehalis and then for about three years during middle school – when she got put into foster care – lived in the area around Toledo.

She spent six months in a drug and alcohol treatment program for pregnant women in Tacoma.

By March of 2009, she was clean, but wanted to get away from the drugs in Vader. She and the baby moved in with a married friend in Winlock.

At first, it went fine, said Cassandra Sines the friend who is now 24. Croft-Payne attended an alternative high school program, she said.

But then she was partying and not coming home to take care of her baby, Sines said. Methamphetamine was her drug of choice then, though later she used heroin, according to Sines.

By June, Child Protective Services put the child in foster care.

Very interesting, could our jane doe just took a nap on top of the train?

VERY interesting. Also seems like a safer place to nap than on the tracks, until the train starts moving.

I wonder if she wasn't just asleep but passed out up there. The train only goes about 20 mph through LV, so you'd think she might have woken up and tried to jump off or climb down when she felt and heard it start to move. But not if she was out cold. I still wonder where her stuff is. Even homeless people have belongings. Can't wait for that tox screen to come back!
