Carl L. Crumrine, 69, was with a hunting group in the Lyman Lake area of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in eastern Summit County.

He was last seen about 5:30 a.m. Monday. A member of his hunting group called law enforcement officials just before 9 p.m. Monday after Crumrine did not return to his campsite after sunset.

Crumrine, who is from West Virginia, is new to the area. He had a small amount of food with him and was prepared for cold weather.

Summit County authorities asking for public's help in locating missing hunter

“They all set out to go hunting and he never returned that day. After the sun had set a member of the group went to a place where they had cell service and contacted us and we sent search crews,” said Lt. Andrew Wright of the Summit County Sheriff’s Department speaking with MetroNews Wednesday.

“We’ve got 25 searchers which include ground searchers, canines, horseback, a fixed wing plane in the air and our Utah Department of Public Safety Helicopter,” said Wright. “It’s a very remote area and where they are located it’s close to 10,000 feet. Anytime somebody goes missing in that higher elevation it’s a concern because the night time temperature drops down into the teens.”

The search is centered in an area of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and the county lies in a rugged area along the border with Wyoming. Search teams have experienced difficulty seeing and worried about the possibility he might be injured.

“Because it is such big country if you wander a mile or two, you can get turned around. Another concern is if he may have fallen and been injured which makes it difficult to locate him. One of our search members on horseback said on the radio he couldn’t see more than ten yards around him because the brush is so thick.”

UPDATE: Son talks about missing father from Buckhannon

His father is an experienced hunter and that he was prepared for something like his to happen. While he is almost 70, his son says he is active and in good shape.

His father has bad knees and he may be hurt, but he thinks he's probably sitting tight waiting for someone to find him.

KUTV — Carl Crumine is still missing as the search reaches its sixth day with officials changing their focus to a "limited search."

As a result, search and rescue teams will de-escalate their search efforts, according to Lt. Andrew Wright of Summit County Sheriff's Office. There will be a drop in search frequency and a command post will no longer be in operation.

After all this time, I hate to say it, but he's not coming home, alive (MOO). I wish he would come back to home sweet home WV, but this long in those elements and considering his age, I just think it's really doubtful
Sadly he probably passed with the first week or so. Chances are it will be months/years if his body is ever found. Has many similarities to other cases of hunters going missing in national parks

Police investigating Facebook post of missing Summit County hunter
[...]

“It’s pretty heartless if this is, in fact, a fake profile. It is very cruel of someone to put the family through this to create more questions surrounding his disappearance,” said Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright.

[...]

According to a newly unsealed search warrant affidavit, “Carl had kept his possessions with him since he arrived at the camp on (Oct. 12) but on (Oct. 14), he gave his wallet, his phone and his phone password to (another person) ‘just in case’ and asked him to keep the items in (his) truck.”

There had been no activity on Crumrine’s bank accounts or social media accounts until Dec. 4.

On that day, a woman who is a friend of Crumrine’s daughter received a post on Facebook by someone claiming to be Crumrine, the affidavit states.

“The conversation was started by Carl’s Facebook profile sending (the woman) a message saying ‘Hi’ and said it was Carl. When (the woman) accused the person of not being Carl as he was still missing, Carl said, ‘It’s me. ... I have been with a friend of mine at New York,’” according to the warrant.

... Facebook “refused to comply with warrant.”

Wright said detectives were now contemplating what their next step in the investigation will be. He said the sheriff’s offices doesn’t have any reason to believe the post actually came from Crumrine, but the investigation will continue until detectives can come up with answers.

Paul was with search teams in Utah in the days which followed his dad’s disappearance. Searchers were eventually forced off the mountain when the first snow of the season set in. ...

“The snow is compacted and it’s very hard to go up in there with anything other than snowmobiles. When they can there have also been aerial searches by chopper. They’re looking for any signs of where he might have been, like a campfire,” he said.

[...]

Most recently the search team was granted permission to extend the search into neighboring Wyoming in case the elder Crumrine was able to make it that far and not realize his whereabouts. According to his son the state line in the area is an open power line right of way, which likely would have given his father something to follow to civilization, unless he had crossed it at night and not realized it was there.

“He could be in a cave, there could be an abandoned cabin up there. He’s got everything he needs to survive. He could shoot game for food and there are other ways of gathering food. He definitely could be up there, we just don’t know,” Paul said.

[...]

Utah authorities say the winter activities status of the search is likely going to be in place until at least April when the mountain thaws enough to allow a return to normal foot and canine searches of the remote region.

Summit County’s Search and Rescue volunteers sacrifice to find those who are lost or hurt in the wilderness

Siddoway said that, while in most every case, SAR is searching for a person the team members haven’t met, they come to know that person very well in their mind.

He said he often develops close relationships with family members of missing people.

That makes it particularly difficult when it comes time to discontinue a full-time search, as was done a week after 69-year-old hunter Carl Crumrine went missing in the Uintas in October.

[...]

Those instances, though, are rare. Since 2003, the team has failed to find only three people: Garrett Bardsley, Melvin Heaps and Crumrine.

[...]

“Tough to leave the scene knowing there was no closure,” Todd said. “Melvin Heaps, Carl Crumrine — not too many days I don’t think about them.”

Siddoway said those searches are not over.
