I have not followed this case but I believe I read a shotgun was used. Is there gunshot residue from a shotgun and has the gun been recovered?
I have been unable to find any reports that indicate the weapon used was a shotgun. If you could link your source, I'd be very grateful. I know you said you aren't following this case, but maybe you remember where you first read about it?

It said in an article that he relocated from California. I wonder if his son was already in Utah, or if the father had mobility rights.
It sounds to me like all three of them moved from California, but there really isn't much information about it. MOO

Police identify victims in Sandy shooting
“They actually moved here from California so that his son could go to school here because he thought it was a safe neighborhood,” Thomas said. “That’s kind of disturbing.”

The custody situation is where the answer to all of this will be found. It was ugly.

Thanks. I've learned to keep reading before I spend time looking for a link as other posters will find it before I do.

Interesting. Do you think dad was the intended victim?

Looks like the child was living with them. In one of the early reports they said they mentioned his son’s school was nearby. Maureen talks on facebook about being her step-son’s co room mother. Sounds like she was happy to be involved in her step-son’s life. I wonder where he is now and hope he is doing OK.

What puzzles me is that the lady was killed but her husband left with a disabling wound and not finished off. Maybe she was the target and he was just in the way? Hope arrest follows soon and motive will become clear.

I think they were both the intended victims. Jeff is a great dad and Maureen was being a rock-star step mom- going above and beyond.

Has there been any news at all about Jeff’s condition?

He was upgraded to stable condition per March 13 article. He has also spoken with investigators.

Bumping for news soon, I hope. Praying for the full recovery of Jeff and loving care for his son.

Thank you! I saw that but that was over a week ago. Wondering if he’s out of the hospital and reunited with son.

I honestly don’t know, but it’s next to impossible to shoot yourself in the butt with a shotgun. MOO
That is what I was thinking. Shot in the butt with a shot gun. That would be difficult to self inflict. And of course we havent heard whether a gun was found at the scene.
