David Andrew Engler, 54, was hiking in the Grand County area and was expected to return home Sunday night, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. He has not been seen since April 5 at 6:45 a.m., when his 2024 Toyota Tundra was spotted by an LPR camera traveling southbound on State Road 191 at the south end of Grand County.

David Andrew Engler

April 5 was also the last time he responded to any text messages from family, authorities said.

Engler’s cellphone appears to be off, and there is no available location data, according to authorities.

“He was possibly in the Dead Horse Point area, but his current location is unknown,” the sheriff’s office said.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has found David Engler's truck in a remote area of San Juan County.
David is still missing, the Sheriff has crews in the area currently looking for him, at this time we are not releasing the specific location.

I wonder why the Sheriff's office is not releasing a more specific location? San Juan county is in the southeastern-most corner of the state (just below Grand County). It's a sparsely populated area.Lots of ''stark beauty'' but virtually no one around if things go wrong.

They likely don't want people who are specifically trained in searching doing so in a remote area as (1) what physical clues in soil or topography might be destroyed unintentionally and/or (2) the terrain is such someone might be hurt. Just guessing but that's often the reason.

This is interesting - the family has reported in multiple FB posts that as of April 17 for those who are interested and able, Search & Rescue is opening up the area for any volunteers who want to come help search for Dave on the upcoming Saturday and, if needed, Sunday. They have provided geographic coordinates to the search area (a specific trailhead is mentioned) but as that's second hand info from family and not from SAR or LE (not verified source) I won't link.
