GUILTY UT - Destiny Norton, 5, Salt Lake City, 16 July 2006

  • #81
From the transcripts of Nancy Grace show:

R. NORTON: Yes, because I happened to have -- before I gave her the bath that night, we had trimmed the underneath of her hair, so I had fresh hair in the bathroom so -- from when it happened.

From when IT happened - what is IT?

I feel so sorry for this family. I do wish people would STOP allowing their children to play outside alone.

I agree, Jeana, my 16 y.o. daughter just doesn't understand why I won't let her sit on the porch and talk on the phone at 9 or 10 at night. Nope, no way! I tell her too much can happen in a split second and even at her age it just isn't safe to be on the porch with no one else around. I can't imagine letting a 5 y.o. go out even on the porch alone. Too many people can lure them to a car with a puppy or kitten or anything like that.

I get a bad hinky type feeling about this little girl's disappearance, but I can't quite put my finger on what gives me these feelings. I looked at the website and the photo of her in front of that draped confederate flag just catches my eye and makes me feel odd - for some reason. I don't know. Like where is that flag draped hanging straight down like that as if it's a back drop for something. I know - I know - I'm just talking nonsense probably, but it's bugging me for some reason.

My 11-year old wanted to be able to walk to her friend's house alone once. I logged into Websleuths and showed her this forum, where one girl missing from the bus stop, another missing walking home from the store, another missing after going to the library. She now understands why I won't allow it.

Hi Less:

Funny, that comment stood out to me too....

Also, I wondered was Destiny getting "ready for bed" or waiting outside for dinner to be ready....which one was it??

I noticed that too. And why do you just trim the underneath of someone's hair? You either trim the ends or you cut the hair - and I would love someone to explain the reasoning behind saying you trimmed the "underneath" of her hair. Is that just how they phrase things in SLC or what?

Funny thing is (and what a huge coincidence) - I was exactly five years old when I took scissors and cut my own hair and my mom was really mad. I had to stand in the corner after I got my behind swatted. And my oldest daughter was three when she took scissors to her own hair - my youngest daughter was five when she did the same thing. I think it must be just a little girl thing. Am I alone here - or isn't this common for girls to cut their hair. Seems like I've heard other friends of mine say their daughters did this same thing.

I read somewhere else that her father had let her go out into the backyard while he was cooking dinner. There was supposedly a nice big wooden fence around the yard with a gate that Destiny was capable of opening. I don't understand why there are so many different versions of what happened floating around. Usually when there are several stories about what happened, people immediately think the parents are involved. If that is true (I'm not speculating that it is), you would think they at least would tell the same story if they are trying to cover up what happened. The stories coming out are nothing alike. I'm very confused about what really happened. This isn't good for this case at all.

From the transcripts, this is what the mom said on Nancy Grace - which isn't specific enough about whether it was the front porch or the back yard.

RACHAEL NORTON, MOTHER OF DESTINY NORTON: Nothing out of the ordinary. We gave her a bath, and we were cooking dinner. And she asked her dad if she could go outside for a second because dinner was almost done, and he said yes. And five minutes later, he went out to inform her dinner was done, and then we could not find her anymore.

From the Nancy Grace show quoted, she had a bath, put an oversized t-shirt on and asked her father if she could play in the front yard. That's where she didsappeared.

My daughter was 4 when I walked into the bedroom and found her playing "hairdresser" with her 2 year old sister...by the time I discovered what they were up to....my 2 year old was almost bald....LOL...

Wasn't there something said "somewhere" about Destiny going out the back door where a dog run was set up and they think she was able to get out of the run & into the yard where she subsequently disappeared....

I'm not liking all these conflicting stories that are coming out, either.....

ETA: Here is the link about the dog run...coming from a "family" spokesperson....not in the linked story but in the video (I didn't access it) but there is a post in the missing & information discussion area thread that said this.....

Three adult couples, including the Nortons, live in the Central City house near 700 South and 500 East. Four children also live there. Some of the people lived on the streets for a brief time and are sharing rent to bring themselves up in the world, family friend Jeannie Hill said.
"We're a family," she said. "We help each other out."
Everyone in the house had been questioned by detectives two or three times since Destiny disappeared about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
During each interview, investigators looked each person in the eyes and asked several times during the course of the interview, "Did you do it?" Willner said.

"They're treating us like suspects. But that's what they have to do . . . make sure of everything," he said. "It's cool. I'll answer any question to help move things along."
Other family friends told the Deseret Morning News they were asked by FBI agents to fill out "personality profiles" about Destiny. All said they were willing to cooperate.
"We're OK with that. We have nothing to hide," Hill said. "We want our little girl found."

I agree Less. I have read this over and over including everything before and after it. It is a strange use of words.

Speaking of a strange use of words. I think when NG asked what she thinks happened to Destiny and she said "I think someone snagged her." is a little strange too. Grabbed her, took her, kidnapped her....I don't know, snagged her just sounds weird to me.

I don't think it's a big deal!
I have heard her parents talk...
I don't think it's any more than they don't
always use proper english.

Also... the hair cut...
Some girls have long hair... but the underneeth is cut short.
The only time you can tell is when their hair is
in a pony tail.
It's possible that was the type of hair cut her mom gave her.

After seeing the mom talk... I took the "where it happened"
to mean...she cut her hair and left the hair where the
hair cut happened.

JMO... I don't think the parents had anything to do with her missing.
But... I reserve the right to change my mind! :)

She didn't say "where" it happened - she said "when it happened."

And I'm not saying her parents had anything to do with anything. I just found that statement odd. I wondered what IT was that happened.

Sorry...
I still think she meant when the hair cut happened.
I think IT was the hair cut.
The way she said it was odd.... but I think it goes
with the way they talk.

Don't feel bad, I don't like it either. There's a lot I would say under different circumstances but I don't want to kick a family while they are down, especially if they are innocent.

I didn't care for the way they added the picture of the guy who was questioned. He may be a registered sex offene=r, putting his photograph up there doesn't siw well with me. After all, if he had nothing to do with this, why confuse the issue with having this photogaph.
