Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a Taylorsville man who has been missing for nearly a year.

Dustin Bird, 38, was last seen leaving his home in Taylorsville on Feb. 17, 2017, when he left to meet with a group of friends, according to Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

He hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Bird is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds with medium/light skin. He has brown eyes, and at the time he went missing, had a shaved or buzzed hairstyle and a mustache.

He also has tattoos covering both arms, a large spider tattoo on the top of the right side of his head, “Mia” tattooed on the left side of his neck and “801” tattooed behind his left ear. Lohrke said Bird was last seen wearing jeans and black Nike shoes.

For the first time, Utah law lets families request review of violent crime investigations

This article from Jan 2020 seems to indicate that they found his remains (BBM):

"Lori Wilson said she first reported her son’s disappearance to the Unified Police Department. It moved to West Valley City when human remains and some clothing were found in a canal.

Police showed her evidence, including shoes, which appeared to be her son’s.

She also gave police a sample of her DNA months ago to compare with that of the remains."

And later the article says, "At the time this report was published, Vainuku said the DNA extraction was complete but was not yet compared to Lori’s DNA. She did confirm the remains are of a male."

I wonder if there has been an update on this yet.

I just wanted to bring this thread up again to see if anyone had any update or more information. I actually knew Dustin when I was younger and just stumbled across what happened for the first time today. I had no idea.

Does anyone know if the remains were positively identified? Did anything else come of the investigation of what happened?

I would love to find out that Dustin's mother got some closure. If not and it isn't solved, and there is anything I could do to help, I am local in the area of Dustin and his disappearance and would be happy to help.
