UT - Jeffery Butler, 35, found dead in his Springville home, 24 Feb 2008

They've released the husbands name. His brother in law is on the vid saying that her blood was full of natural gas and that the stove had been left on. He would not answer whether it was left on intentionally or not. An investigator said the stove problem was news to him. From the below link:

The man’s wife, Leslie Butler and two small children were also taken to the hospital. They two children are in good health and are now with grandparents. The mother is still in the hospital. She has lost her hearing and is in fair condition.

ETA: Natural gas stinks to high heaven. But no one is talking about smelling any.

I'm glad I am totally electric. I always forget and leave the oven on and I do not have a sense of smell.

If the mother has lost her hearing, and the children are fine, being they are smaller humans, would they be okay if they were in a different area in the house? I wonder if they were doing anything in their basement that would disrupt gas trapped in an earth pocket or hit a line?

It could be a simple as the possibility that the kids were at school and out playing and away from the gas more than the parents?

KatK, that's true, thank God for that otherwise this situation could have turned out worse. I wonder why neither the mother of father smelled the gas? Do people ever not smell it? Would they both have had a bad sense of smell?

Carbon monoxide is odorless, remember? ;) That's why the detectors are so very, very important!

If you're asleep, the smell wouldn't even rouse you but put you into a deeper sleep-like state before eventually killing you. Sounds to me like the LE spoke too soon on their opinion of the case before evaluating all circumstances.

If the wife is still in the hospital, then who refused entry to the investigators? Could fumes from a meth lab kill someone?

I'm thinking if this is a case of gas poisoning (of whatever type), then maybe the husband had a medical condition that made him more susceptible to it's effects.:waitasec:

I wouldn't speculate too much until all the facts and toxicology reports are in. Once they are in, the LE might be needing to make an apology.

What is the smell when you turn the gas on the stove on? I think i got confused..

Read here and here. Carbon Monoxide may come from a cooking stove, but that isn't the fuel. ;)

I want to give some insight into Sundays in Utah. The majority here are LDS (Mormon). They are not allowed to shop, play, etc on Sundays. Or they are in church. So if this family was LDS, the kids wouldn't be outside playing. And if they weren't they wouldn't have anyone to play with. My bet is everyone was in the house.

After hearing the 911 call, it seems the dad was long gone. His wife said she had been sleeping. Maybe they were behind closed doors? There is a question now about the stove being left on. Maybe a murder suicide attempt? Maybe by the dad since he got the worst of it. Maybe it was an accident?

Sunday was also cold and drizzly and with snow still on the ground, no one was outside.

I wonder if Leslie's refusal of access to the house was merely because she couldn't hear what she was being asked?

Hey Newkid, are you from Utah? If so, waving hi!

Ok then, is the house a split level house and the husband was found on the lower ground? :waitasec:

It is a single story with an attached garage, and most likely a basement. I'm not sure where the husband was found. Just on the ground.

Well, I wasn't too clear I see. I mean those houses that are only one storey, but have rooms that you step down into, or up into? (About a foot between "levels".) Could it be one of those? :waitasec:

Yep! Hi to you too.

This story is weird. I've missed the news lately so I'm glad I can come here and catch up on it.

I live in Utah also but have to say that I see plenty of people going about their business on Sunday. Yes in the morning many are going to church, but I also see children playing and if I go to wal-mart always have to wait in line because there are many shoppers. Just today on the morning news they were talking about the percentage of mormons in the state is shrinking, I believe they said 56% now.
Not all the malls and restaurants are open on Sunday but the ones that are, do get business. Of course where I work (jail) we seem to keep a steady customer flow, both mormon and non mormon :)
