Layton man allegedly planned the killing of his wife, in-laws, dogs

Here is what police say happened on the day a Utah man allegedly killed his wife and her parents before calling 911 to report the crime.

LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) — The Layton man accused of killing his wife and her parents before calling 911 and posting on Facebook reportedly told authorities he had been “thinking of doing this a few days ago,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

Jeremy Lake Bailey, 34, was arrested after allegedly shooting three family members and three of their four dogs in their home near 1800 E Gentile St. on Friday, May 19.

Authorities said around 9:45 a.m. Bailey called dispatch to report “there will be a murder-suicide” and provided his address. He allegedly told police multiple times on the phone the victims were already dead reportedly saying he had killed them around 20 minutes prior.

Police said Bailey called dispatch again when police arrived to tell authorities he was leaving the house to be taken into custody. He then reportedly complied with all police commands and was arrested without incident.

Officers entered the home and found three deceased victims. They have been identified as:

• Anastasia Stevens, 36, Bailey’s wife
• Becky Stevens, 61, step-mother of Anastasia Stevens
• Donald Stevens, 73, father of Anastasia Stevens

Additionally, three out of four of the family’s dogs were also killed.

It feels like our society has an influx of this type of multiple murder situation right now… seems to be ever changing throughout the decades what type of homicidal atrocity is trending am I wrong?

Remember when people just took their own lives instead of a bunch of others? I’m sorry if I come off as pro-suicide because I am not! But the selfishness to take out your whole group of loved ones like you own them is beyond explicable and completely breaks my heart.

The arrest report states that one of the victims (not specified) contacted a therapist earlier that morning. The message reportedly said: "I think we may have a very real problem. So I uncovered [a] load of his shady s***. And it's really bad. Like scary. I think it may be time for legal interference I know I definitely need to find an attorney and He's still at the house so I can't talk."

Sounds like something beyond the "usual" things that are uncovered like affairs or questionable business dealings. I'm very curious now about what was discovered....

I was surprised to learn (National Database of Mass Murder is the source) that a good one-third of mass murders are domestic violence/family related (and have been for a long time - there was a big surge of them during the Great Depression as well)

We do of course come across the same stories over and over (as headlines with few details) so sometimes I find myself thinking there's even more of a certain type of event. Suicide and extensive suicide (family annihilation is a common kind) have accounting for about one-third of mass murders since the 1920's.

We have had a bump-up in mass murders from 2016 or thereabout onward, a gradual rise (but a decline, perhaps, in serial killing).

Victim's FB, she wasn't very active. Her post on Sept 15 2018 refers to serious problems in her relationship with Jeremy.

ETA I speculate this was a sadly familiar story: after many years enduring abuse, she was killed when she made up her mind to leave. I think her parents may have been there to support her/keep her safe, under-estimating the lengths he would go to, to be in control of her.
