Search underway for missing person in Utah's Zion National Park following flash flood

Following a flash flood, the Zion National Park search and rescue team is continuing to search for a missing person. The Utah park's Narrows and Riverside Walk remain closed on Saturday as the search for the missing person continues, according to park officials.

Authorities identified the hiker as Jetal Agnihotri of Tucson, Arizona. Agnihotri was overdue from a trip in the Narrows, officials said.

It looks like Jetal wrote a paper with colleagues about flood early warning systems. She is a graduate student at the University of Arizona studying hydrology and atmospheric sciences. It’s mind boggling that she got caught in the very thing she studies.

Her friends "stayed back" due to the flash flood warnings. Hiker missing after flash flood at Utah’s Zion National Park The Narrows is extremely treacherous if there's torrential rain (i.e. thunderstorm) as there's nowhere for the water to go and not many places for the hikers to seek higher ground. Her friends are fortunate, they elected to stay behind. Being able to swim might have helped but given the power of the water, it would have still been very dangerous. Prayers for her family and friends.

The video is so sad! I am super surprised the family that took the video didn't report it to the parks service. From my understanding, she wasn't reported missing until that evening. Her scream hits my heart. :(

My understanding is that it was reported. Calls immediately came in that people were washed away. Not sure where the miscommunication happened. Imo, a lot of calls and info came in all at once.

Edit: I'm removing the part about her actually continuing her hike with a friend.

I wonder if that’s why she was so set on seeing The Narrows; maybe her studies had her interested in that particular area? I’m sad that she decided to go despite the flash flood warnings, not being able to swim, and her friends deciding to stay back. Not victim blaming in any way — just sad that this happened to her. The video is heart breaking.

Earlier this year I voluntarily tubed down a fast-flowing river with some friends. One friends tube got away from her and it was very, very scary trying to get her out of the water…and that was with all of us being able to swim, AND having life jackets. If we were that scared then, I can only begin to imagine how scared Jetal was.

I hope by some miracle she is found alive.

(All MOO)

I think I'm missing something @YaYa_521 above post with video said she was floating ahead of "the man", was he located? Was he apart of the group?
I don't think he was, @swanniee11. The snipped portion from the report linked below suggests to me that Jetal was the only person from their group who visited The Narrows.

“We wanted to do The Narrows,” Mostafa said. That was the plan, but plans changed. Hearing the word of a flash flooding, Mostafa said they talked together about what they should do. Eventually, they decided they would hang back, but Mostafa said Agnihotri was excited to visit The Narrows and decided to go in on her own. “She wanted to do The Narrows more than us,” Mostafa recalled.

In Zion, there are actual hiking routes through the Narrows, but you can also basically drive up to it and walk on an elevated, paved path with lots of benches and viewpoints. In previous flash floods (2014 comes to mind) the area right up to the walkways has flooded, and there are lower areas that are perfectly safe and accessible. She could have simply driven to the parking lot and walked on the walkway, not necessarily hiking through the river canyon.

I have seen tons of videos of hikers who get stranded on the wrong side of the parking lot during a flash flood and have to hike out/hike around. Hoping this is her situation and that she was not in the water.

It's been quite a while since I've hiked The Narrows. It's one of the "must-do" trails for many tourists. Even on a dry day, you end up wading through water as I recall. Surprised there are no barriers placed when flash flooding is a strong possibility. Other trails, like Angel's Landing, often are blocked off if there is imminent danger, i. e. lightning, landslide. Hoping there is a way she is safe and can be rescued.

On another note, a colleague and friend of mine, his partner and his son were literally just there, hiking Angel's Landing and The Narrows.

"You know, two and a half days of searching inside the park, not having any luck in locating this young lady, we've now moved the search outside of the park through Springdale, Rockville and further south toward Virgin Utah," said Sgt. Darrell Cashin with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Sgt. Cashin said they will continue search and rescue efforts during the daylight hours in hopes of finding Agnihotri.

"The search is going to continue as long as we feel there's a relative chance of locating her," said Sgt. Cashin.

Jumping off of this, I'm curious if anyone else went missing or died during this flash flood?
No one else is still missing or died during this flood, but at least one person is still hospitalized (expected to survive) and many needed rescue.

I have a friend who shattered his pelvis in a flash flood in Zion (he was featured on an episode of “I Survived”) and his story is terrifying. I feel absolutely awful for this poor woman and her family.

Obviously he was grateful they saved his life, but his helicopter rescue bill was also frightening: it was in the tens of thousands of dollars.

I’ve hiked Zion, as well as other areas where flash floods occur.

I have a healthy respect for the danger involved with flash flood after witnessing two different flash floods, one in Nevada and one in Kentucky, while on hiking or camping trips.

The amount of force from a flash flood is just unbelievable. In one of the flash floods I witnessed (from higher ground) I watched vehicles washing out of the parking lot with tremendous speed. They looked like matchbox cars being bounced around.

'She is gone': Missing hiker found deceased after flash flood in Zion

SPRINGDALE, Utah (KUTV) — An Arizona woman who went missing during a flash flood in southern Utah was found deceased, the family stated.

Jetal Agnihotri, 29, was in the Narrows region of Zion National Park on Friday when the flood waters swept her away from her group. She was reportedly discovered Monday evening during the fourth day of the search.

"She is gone," said her brother, Pujan Agnihotri, who traveled from Texas to be near the search efforts.

The siblings' parents traveled from Arizona to the Zion National Park area, as well.

It wasn't immediately known where Agnihotri was discovered, but crews had been working their way down the Virgin River over the weekend. The search had reportedly expanded nearly 22 miles downstream from the area Agnihotri was last seen.

Oh this is just devastating. So terribly sorry to hear she is no longer with us. Was really hoping she’d managed to hang on somewhere and survive. Life is so fragile. This family and her friends will be in my prayers.

Rest in peace, Jetal. :(

23 Aug 2022

SPRINGDALE, Utah – On Monday, August 22, Jetal Agnihotri of Tucson, Ariz. was found in the Virgin River near the Court of the Patriarchs in Zion National Park and was later pronounced deceased by a medical examiner. The National Park Service has ended the search and rescue operation that began on Friday, August 19.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family of Jetal Agnihotri,” Jeff Bradybaugh, Zion National Park superintendent said.

More than 170 responders contributed to operations over the course of the four day search and rescue operation. Zion National Park extends thanks to our partners:

  • Bureau of Land Management
  • Color Country Interagency Fire Center
  • Kane County Search and Rescue
  • Hurricane Valley Fire District
  • National Park Service staff from Grand Canyon National Park and Lake Mead National Recreation Area
  • Springdale Police Department
  • Utah Search Dogs
  • US Forest Service
  • Washington County Search and Rescue
  • Washington County Sheriff’s Office
These responders worked inside and outside the park. The response involved work by swift water trained rescuers, search dogs, and a total of more than 1500 person-hours searching in and near the Virgin River.

During the search, park rangers closely monitored the weather. Several seasonal-monsoon rains increased flow in the Virgin River to a peak of more than 1100 cubic feet per second. The river was flowing at about 50 cubic feet per second when the Zion Search and Rescue Team ended their search.

Search and rescue timeline
Zion National Park received a report around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, August 19 of multiple hikers being swept off their feet by a flash flood in the Narrows near the Temple of Sinawava.

After receiving the initial report, the National Park Service immediately sent rangers to assess the situation and began mobilizing for a large-scale response. Near the Temple of Sinawava, park rangers found an injured hiker who had been swept downstream several hundred yards. A National Park Service ambulance transported the hiker to a hospital.

Other rangers hiked up Riverside Walk and found several hikers who were isolated by high water on high ground. Rangers directed them to remain in place until water receded and then assisted them to safety.

Zion National Park maintenance staff who had been doing other work on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive immediately moved to positions along the Virgin River to monitor conditions there. Park rangers and members of the Zion Search and Rescue Team deployed along the Virgin River with flotation devices and ropes prepared to reach visitors who might be in the water.

Throughout the afternoon and evening of August 19, Zion National Park rangers interviewed groups of visitors exiting the Narrows and Riverside Walk to ensure they were not missing a member of their party. At that time, no hikers were reported missing.

Later in the evening, the National Park Service received a report of a hiker, Jetal Agnihotri of Tucson, Ariz., who was overdue from a trip in the Narrows. In response, park rangers continued monitoring the river during the night and mobilized additional searchers early on August 20. Zion Search and Rescue Team members as well as staff from many partner organizations worked in and near the Virgin River searching for Ms. Agnihotri.

The search ended on Monday, August 22 when Zion Search and Rescue Team members found the missing person, Jetal Agnihotri, in the Virgin River near the Court of the Patriarchs. The Court of the Patriarchs is about 6 river miles south of the Narrows.
