Eric’s sister, Amy Richins, shared an emotional statement with the court about the impact this case has taken on her family.

Pleading with the judge not to release Kouri, Amy said she fears for her life and for the lives of the couple’s sons.

“I never knew evil like this existed,” Amy said, adding that Kori is “devoid of moral sensibility,” and there’s no telling what she would do if she was released. “Our family has already suffered enough.”

During the hearing, prosecutors also called three witnesses – a Summit County Sheriff’s detective, a private investigator, and a financial forensics expert.

Chris Kotrodimos, a private investigator, testified about the time period when Kouri unlocked her phone at 3:07 a.m. on March 4, 2022, and when she called 911 at 3:22 a.m. reporting her husband’s death. Kotrodimos said there was data deleted from the device.

Brooke Karrington, who specializes in financial forensics, testified about Kouri’s financial difficulties and the debt she had incurred through her real estate business. Karrington said Kouri received $1.3 million in life insurance payouts after Eric’s death.

A Utah mother of three who wrote a children's book about coping with grief after her husband's death and was later accused of fatally poisoning him will remain in jail for the duration of her trial on murder and drug charges, a judge said Monday.

Kouri Richins held her head and cried as a detective testified about authorities finding her husband dead and "cold to the touch," and prosecutors argued the evidence against her was strong enough to deny her bail.

The detention hearing built off court documents in which prosecutors allege Richins slipped five times the lethal dose of fentanyl into a Moscow mule cocktail she made for her husband, Eric Richins, amid marital disputes and fights over a multimillion-dollar mansion she ultimately purchased as an investment.

Prosecutors called multiple witnesses, including Det. Jeff O’Driscoll, the lead investigator in the case.

O’Driscoll fielded questions about the relationship between Kouri Richins and “C.L.,” the friend and employee of Kouri who allegedly gave her the fentanyl used to allegedly kill Eric. He told prosecutors that Kouri Richins had received fentanyl pills from C.L. in early 2022. She allegedly told C.L. the pills were to help a client who was complaining of a back injury.

Amy said Eric’s life “was taken in a senseless act of poisoning” and that her family is “brokenhearted.” She described Eric as a loving father, a “true champion of all people,” and a successful businessman.

Tearfully pleading with the judge not to release Kouri, Amy said she fears for her life and for the lives of the couple’s sons.

"Please do not let Kouri out on bail where she will be a risk to do further harm," she said. "Please protect what Eric put his life on the line for – his three boys."
