And an article about Johnson registering in Vancouver, WA--which is just over the bridge from Portland, OR:

http://www.columbian.com/news/2011/apr/14/utah-man-registers-as-sex-offender-in-clark-county/

Over 50 comments. One has to wonder about Johnson's safety. Especially being that he's cognitively challenged. He's a marked man, it seems. Not a good situation any way you look at it, IMO.

I'm trying to figure out just what's in that area. I see a number of churches. Churches typically mean children.

ETA: There's a large salvage and second hand store on that block:

BBM No, it isn't a good situation, not at all. What makes the situation worse is people almost being forced to take up the slack in the law which allows monsters, cognitively challenged or not, to walk free, able to harm more children.

Right has become wrong, and wrong has become right and sometimes I wonder who the cognitively challenged really are.

Because of Rosa's Law (the law that changes all government generated information which included the term, Mental Retardation, to Intellectual Disability), it is often necessary to use both terms to properly research this disability. Here's an excellent resource:

http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/intellectual_disabilities.html

Seven of my 14 children are diagnosed with this disability and I can assure you that there is a vast range of abilities, reasoning capability and the ability to differentiate between wrong and right with my seven children. A full one percent of our population suffers from this lifelong and life-changing disability and trust me when I say that these 2.5 million people are greatly underserved.

People with this diagnosis do not possess the ability to straighten up and fly right any more than we can expect a quadriplegic to just get up and walk. And note that it is often co-morbid with other disabilities, thus complicating matters even more.
Oh I disagree with the last part of your post. I have mild Cerebral Palsy and I know right from wrong. I have issues with fine motor skills such as writing. My math skills are whacked. People like this man make it harder for people who really have a cognitive disability. Furthermore if he can run a business he can aid in his own defense. Therefor try his a$% and lock him up. JMHO

rpipergirl--I'm sorry I missed your post. If you'll note, I said that those with cognitive disabilities (legally described as having an IQ under 69 or functional abilities equal to such) that there is a wide range of real-life scenarios. Learning disabilities and CP don't automatically mean that a person has any sort of cognitive disorder. A true cognitive disorder if far more serious and far reaching. It commonly effects a person's reasoning and the understanding of cause and effect.

I have a daughter who has CP, is deaf and who has an IQ of 50. She's most definitely cognitively challenged and diagnosed with permanent developmental disabilities. She would NEVER break a rule, however, much less a law. She's meticulous about following rules to the letter and checking and rechecking that what she's doing is the right thing. I don't think the same can be said about Johnson.

Speaking of Johnson:

Freed sex offender returning to Utah
September 27, 2011

"A sex offender who was freed in April despite facing 20 new child sex abuse counts is coming back to Utah for a psychological evaluation. The evaluation could lead to a trial for Lonnie Hyrum Johnson, 39. Johnson returned to the state Tuesday from Oregon, where he was living with his sister, a Utah County prosecutor said. Johnson returned without a law enforcement escort.

and

"...After multiple evaluations, the judge had found Lonnie Johnson incompetent to stand trial and, based on a doctor’s report, unlikely to ever be able to do so. Prosecutors, however, believe Lonnie Johnson could be restored to competency, based on new information from the defendant’s one-time physician at the Utah State Hospital.

An affidavit from psychiatrist Peter Heinbecker reports "inconsistencies" between the defendant’s "behavioral and cognitive functioning." The report cites examples of Lonnie Johnson being able to meet goals, interact with others and teach himself to learn new techniques by reading manuals...."

There you go. Mr. Johnson just might be savvier than he wants us to believe. Being able to learn from manuals (rather than just read them), travel alone, and meet goals sounds like the man might be headed for trial.
