UT - Sierra Newbold, 6, abducted & murdered, West Jordan, 26 June 2012 *Arrest*

There are several companies that solicite around Utah offering inhome security systems for NO upfront cost for the equipment, and you ONLY pay a monthly fee - especially if you refer any neighbors and put a sign up in your yard. I have not allowed any of these salesmen in my home, but I have seen the signs in many of my neighbor's yards. I do not find it nefarious that there is video from their home at this point in time.

Nor do I. A friend had state-of-the-art security installed around his home due to bad neighbours, the technician installed cameras inside the home as well, to capture any possible intruders...the technician recommended it, it is part of the parcel of complete home security.

If you have a clear conscience, a camera inside your house is just an extra security precaution - if someone breaks in, you've got them on film inside your house which will make arrest/conviction more likely (and recovery of your own possessions).

It is not a sign of anything other than being security conscious, and having a clear conscience as to your own behaviour inside your own home.

BTW...my friend ended up being (incorrectly) associated with his criminal neighbours, and his 24/7 recordings were eventually what cleared him...the police took his entire system when he was first accused of being associated with these people...including outdoor, indoor cameras, and the hard drive.

I have owned a security system for two decades. I've never thought of getting an indoor surveillance camera. I am worried about preventing someone from getting inside my home rather than worrying about what is going on inside my home.

If you got one installed now, they would probably recommend an indoor camera, particularly if you have a lot of expensive goods in one room...like a tv room for instance.

My friend couldn't see the point of indoor surveillance either...until it got him out of jail.

I find that those choice of words to be nice for an obituary. They will be meeting her again. I see that a lot with Salt Lake City obits. Being raised Mormon (I am not now) but they mean they will be together for eternity in their beliefs.

I wonder if they mean surveillance in the home, (inside the surroundings of their property)

I do find it weird how they put "stepbrother" Bobby in the obit like that, nothing like feeling like an outcast. And if they did have surveillance inside maybe they don't trust family members that stay there or come over. That area of town is the best but its not the worst either.

I know a family that they don't trust their own son cause he was a druggy and always stole there stuff to trade for drugs.

My niece is about 3 minutes from Newbold's home. So sad! I hope they get DNA back.

I am getting a really bad feeling about this. I hope that it wasn't someone that Sierra knew and trusted that did this to her.

Is this case going to be similar to Isabel's case? The rumors about it being an inhouse family kind of incident, I mean.

Lord I hope not! I hope that because of DNA, and the fact that her body was found so quickly that we will have some answers soon. There wasn't a lot of time for the DNA to degrade so, hopefully we will know something soon. I really pray it is not someone she trusted...

I am confused. LE supposedly has in-home surveillance footage. So doesn't that indicate that they would have seen her being taken?

You would think. But at this point I don't even think it has been confirmed that she was taken from her room/home. And then to see it reported they have no suspects is frustrating!

Well she had to be taken at some point, since she ended up outside...whether she was alive when taken is one question.

This is one of the first articles. So LE has had this surveillance since the beginning. Wonder if they are getting anywhere with it.

"The chief confirmed that police were analyzing surveillance video and trying to enhance some of the images recorded before daylight. He said the FBI is assisting West Jordan police with the video and could not comment on its contents.

"Until we enhance the video I can't say what it shows," he said."

Right. And that is what I think too - that she was taken from her room. But with so few details and LE not confirming anything, it was not know if she wondered out in the morning and then something happened or if someone came into the home and took her.

If it was someone who was part of the family or knew the family well, then they would have known about the video cams. And they might have known how to circumvent them easily.

Often there will be only one camera inside, usually where the electronics are concentrated, eg family rooms.

It would be highly unusual to have cameras in private areas like bedrooms and bathrooms...as well as expensive. Don't forget, in-home security is mainly to catch burglars interested in your expensive items, not to record those who live there.

I read that it states a brother lived in the home, but it doesn't specify that Bobby lived in the home. The one who was arrested didn't live at their address if the People link is correct. I am just not convinced this REN liked above is from their immediate family, but may just be a coincidence. However, it may explain the quiet nature of LE with no pleas. They may beleieve that the murderer is already off the streets - hypothetically speaking of course.

However, I am still more inclined to believe this is an outside person that committed this crime. It is very apparent in our community that this family is very sincere and shaken to their very core by this action.

I agree that it does not seem like the immediate family is involved. But it seems strange that a random perp would dare enter that home. Sierra's father is a big strong man. No doubt he would have killed an intruder with his bare hands if he caught him leaving with his baby girl. It just seems there would be easier targets, but then again, if a sick freak had seen her and had his evil heart set on her---who knows.

Sexual Battery in Utah refers to sex crimes not typically covered by rape statutes, such as unlawful sexual conduct. Sexual battery is often characterized as sexual touching or penetration without consent of the person. The mere touching of another person for the purpose of sexual gratification qualifies as sexual battery. Penetration does not have to occur, unlike a rape charge.

In Utah, sexual battery is codified in the law as Forcible Sexual Abuse. According to the laws of Utah;
A person commits forcible sexual abuse if:
the victim is 14 years of age or older and,
under circumstances not amounting to rape, object rape, sodomy, or attempted rape or sodomy, the actor
touches the anus, buttocks, or any part of the genitals of another, or touches the breast of a female, or
otherwise takes indecent liberties with another, or causes another to take indecent liberties with the actor or another,
with intent to cause substantial emotional or bodily pain to any person or with the intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person,
without the consent of the other, regardless of the sex of any participant.

Penalties for Sexual Battery in Utah*

The penalty for sexual battery codified as Forcible Sexual Abuse has the following sentencing guidelines: Forcible Sexual Abuse is a 2nd Degree Felony with a prison sentence of 1-15 years.
