I am so sorry that I missed your post. And more sorry for what your family went through. Exactly which fire was your cousin involved in? Sadly, there have been so many it seems.

Have there been any updates on these cases? A recent incident has me wondering about these...

The Twin Falls Sheriff's Office is searching for any clues after finding a burned car with a body inside.

A range deputy made the discovery on Sunday about 30 miles south of Twin Falls near Highway 93.

The deputy found the body in the Backwaters area of the Salmon Dam.

This is near the Idaho-Nevada border, about 2-3 hours northwest of Salt Lake City. It was around April 19th, about a year after these others. The identity of the man found, Tyler Thoroman, 21, was released yesterday.

Thank you for making this connection! I've been searching and searching for information about what may have happened to Tyler, because it seems like such an odd case, but I didn't know about these other bodies found in burned out cars. I'm off to read this whole thread now to see if I can glean any info. I sure hope they can find out what happened!

pch28 and Cosmictadpole - Thanks for bringing this story up. Tyler was one of my best friends, and I'm still in shock. The details of the previous Utah cases sound eerily similar to what happened to Tyler. Hoping they get it solved soon. :(

Do you all remember when that car was found burning under that bridge in UT right around the time Susan Powell went missing, there was a body in that vehicle as well ? We were all thinking maybe it was her...I will go see if I can find the link I don't believe it is any of them mentioned here but I only read the first page so someone may have posted about it already.

I'll go see if I can find that link ....

Police find burning body in Box Elder County

Last Update: 12/29/2009 8:59 am

PERRY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police have a mystery on their hands after a grizzly discovery Monday night in Box Elder County.

Police found a severely burned body just off I-15 and 1100 South around 6:20p.m on the outskirts of Perry Utah. They believe the body is a woman between 40-55 years old. However, they can't confirm age or gender until an autopsy is completed.
Police found some items next to the body that they hope will help identify the person.

A highway patrolman noticed smoke off the side of the road and called dispatch. When police arrived they found a smoldering body. The body was burned beyond recognition.

Sorry about your loss of best friend to violent crime by someone. My prayers & thoughts are with you & the victim's family sides. Hope that they'll find who did it.

nmr, I'm so terribly sorry for your loss!! I've been trying to find more information about Tyler online to see if anything points to a reason for this happening, and although I haven't found anything that would explain this tragedy, I have seen a decent young guy who a beloved family member and friend. From what I've seen, he doesn't seem to have bene a wild and crazy kid or a trouble maker. I can't imagine what he must have been doing out there and what could possibly have happened to him. Is there any info you can provide to shed some light on this case? And do you have any idea people aren't talking more about it and demanding answers?

Tyler was definitely not a wild and crazy kid. Hilarious and fun to be around, always up for an adventure, but never anything stupid. He and his family were LDS but not very active in the church, though from what I heard, he'd been going to more church functions recently with a friend. He didn't drink, do drugs, smoke, etc. Most of his close friends that I know other than myself and one of my friends were also LDS. He worked full-time for a company that sells industrial equipment, I believe doing computer stuff. He was really tech-savvy and good with computers. He was home schooled most of his life, graduated around 16 IIRC, and did community college for a few years but didn't graduate. I don't think I ever saw him in a bad mood. He was always really happy. We dated briefly when we were...16 or 17, I think. Just the day before he died, he drove to Boise (close to two hours from where he lived) to see my senior voice recital at Boise State. We went out for dinner after with my family, friends, and boyfriend, and then he drove back home. I know he got home around 7:30 PM because he posted on Facebook that he was back home (ironically, his last Facebook status ever). I thanked him for driving so far just for my recital, and he responded shortly before 10 PM. I heard from a friend that his mom heard him on the phone around midnight, and as far as I know, that's the last time he was seen or heard. The same friend talked to him around 10:30, and they made plans for the next morning. I have NO idea why he would have been out near the Nevada border, but I don't think he went out there willingly. The only thing I can think of is something happened to him near his house and someone drove him out there in his car.

I'm not sure how much that helps, but maybe someone can get something out of this. I've been racking my brain trying to think of anything he said that day that may shed some light on the case, but I'm coming up empty. If you have any specific questions let me know - I knew Tyler extremely well, though we hadn't kept in touch as much after I moved away to college in August 2006. We were together pretty much 24/7 when I was living in Twin. Can't believe he's gone.

Thank you so much for the information. That is so hard to imagine talking to your best friend and then the next day they're gone. What I don't understand is the complete lack of coverage and public comment/knowledge. I live not far from Twin and have friends and family that I visit there several times a week. When I was there on Saturday, no one I talked to had even heard about the case at all! People I told about it were shocked that something like that had happened. My fiance works at a bar in town where I imagine he hears gossip about all the current evens, and I asked him to keep his ears open for any talk about this case. He hasn't heard a single person talk about it. Someone from your town is found dead in a burned car and you're not even aware of it? Maybe that's why they still haven't found the person of interest that they're looking for. They need to be saturating the media! Why haven't the parents been on the news asking anyone with information to come forward? This is in no way an indictment of his parents' attitude. I know they must be going through he!! right now, and I can't even begin to imagine what their reasons are for how they're approaching this. I'm just curious if there is a reason for the lack of coverage and publicity.

I am wondering if we should/can start a thread for Tyler in the discussion area. I just don't want to step on any toes or break any forum rules by doing so... Because I have started a list of questions I have about the case, a timeline, and some facts gleaned from news articles and his Facebook that I'd like to post, but I'm not sure if this thread is the right place to do it.

I'm baffled by the lack of information as well. I was pretty close with his family when we were good friends, and I've been in touch with his dad a couple times since all this happened. They haven't been able to provide any additional information other than that there is an ongoing investigation. I'm not sure if they and/or the detectives working on the case may have additional information that they are not ready to disclose yet. That is my hope. By my reasoning, SOMEONE saw SOMETHING. This isn't something that just happened and nobody knows anything about it. Yes, it likely happened late at night, but it was only a mile and a half from a pretty major interstate. People go back and forth from Twin to Nevada all the time. A car fire would, I assume, produce quite a bit of smoke that could easily be seen from the interstate, and I sincerely doubt no one at all drove on the interstate that night. Also, if no one saw anything, they would not be searching for a person of interest. Unfortunately, the vague description fits tons of people (though no one I know of that Tyler knew - I actually searched through all of his Facebook friends to see if anyone matched that description and came up with nothing). Next time I'm in Twin, I'm planning to try to locate the exact place it happened if I can and see if I can figure anything out. It's unlikely but worth a shot.

Let's see, it would have been a Saturday night? Definitely people heading to Jackpot at all times of the night, especially on the weekend, even from as far as Hailey or Sun Valley. Maybe I could post something up there in the Miscellany II section of the classifieds asking if anyone saw anything.

Snipped by me... I've actually thought about doing this myself. If you do, just please be careful. Since we don't know what happened, it might not be safe out there, especially since it's kindof a lonely, isolated looking place. I've driven past on the highway, but I've never been to the reservoir or dam. Is it a popular place to hang out in the summer? Good fishing or swimming? Place where kids might go to party? Do you know if Tyler has ever been out there before for any reason?

  • #118
My boyfriend offered weeks ago to go with me, and we'll both be packing heat so anyone who tries to mess with us will be sorry! I've driven the interstate hundreds of times but never even knew there was a dam back there. I have no idea if he'd ever been there before - I don't know anything about the area, nor do I know of anyone who's been there. He wasn't big into the outdoors or hunting or fishing or anything, so I doubt he was familiar with it.

OK, good. Sounds like you're prepared. Thank you for answering my questions. I have a whole list of them; I'm just waiting for a response from a moderator to see where a thread for Tyler should be started.

nmr, do you know if Tyler was officially reported missing? I guess to post a thread in the "Missing/Located Discussion" forum, there has to have been an official report filed. I'm waiting to find out where to start the thread if there wasn't an official report...
