So impossibly senseless and stupid. The criminal stole two cellphones and $20. Then, he went back in the house, because he forgot his car keys, (doh!). The Butterfields recognized him, as he forgot to wear his mask, and he killed them both.

At least, he didn't kill the sleeping children.
