UT UT - Vilate Kerreen Young, 1-2 years old, Widtsoe, 4th July 1956

Whilst this may be a simple case of accident or stranger abduction I would certainly look more closely at the extended family, many of whom were, presumably, at the ranch. Newel Steed was a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), the sect that was run by Warren Jeffs, currently serving life plus 20 years for child abuse. Warreb Jeffs is the son of the previous leader Rulon Jeffs and Merilyn Steed who, if I have understood the genealogy correctly, is the niece of Newel Steed. Although the Warren Jeffs case dates to the 2000s there was already huge concern about the activities of the FLDS at the time Vilate went missing. In 1953 there was the Short Creek raid where 236 children were removed from their parents due to concerns about the sect practices. All of this may be unrelated to Vilate's disappearance, but it certainly merits close examination.

On another site (which site rules mean may not be linked) there is a comment from a relative which says that some members of Newel Steed's family disapproved his polygamy, which he sought to keep secret (presumably because of the attitude of the authorities), and that there is a story that they sought to take a child of his to prove his paternity and polygamy - but took Vilate by mistake (her parents not being part of the sect). I have no idea if this is true but it should not be difficult for LE to trace the poster for questioning given it was only posted in 2019.

Considering that the missing person's name, Vilate Young, was in her mother's 2004 obit, tells me that your post is probably a logical conclusion. I don't think she's missing at all. The proof is in her mother's obituary. She was 50 in 2004 when her mother died and she would be 68 today. I didn't find her obit in Newspapers.com nor Ancestry.com. The last mention of her still missing in several Utah newspapers was 1959. Nothing after that.

You're right about Newel Steed. He belonged to FLDS according to his obit. He had seven wives, fifty six children, 340 grandchildren and seventy great-grandchildren. It would be quite easy to spirit away a child at a July 4 family gathering of that size.

<<Vilate is described as last seen dressed in a light cotton dress with sandals on her feet. Hundreds of people searched for the little girl in the following weeks. Ground searches, bloodhounds and airplanes were used in the search in a radius of 3 miles from the ranch. Deep ravines running through the property were drained and surrounding Alfalfa fields were cut down in the search efforts. Nine bloodhounds tracked the girls scent until it dead ended at a rural road. I was speculated that she could have been picked up by a passing motorist.>>
