Five members of a Utah family were found dead in their home after a concerned relative checked on the residence, where one survivor was found with a gunshot wound, police said.

The dead are a 42-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy and girls ages 9 and 2, West Valley City police spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku said.

The teenager was hospitalized in unknown condition, Vainuku said.

“We do not know at this point if he is a suspect in this case or if he is a victim in this case,” she said.

The more I think about it, I realize my relating it to the Humiston murders is knee-jerk on my part. Alternately, one of the parents could have carried out murder/suicide, but the 17yo son didn't die from his injuries.

So many open questions. When were they all last heard from? How long had the boys been laying there injured? Was there a gun on scene? Whose body was it near? I'm sure forensic evidence will give us a better idea in the coming days as well.

It is very strange that they aren't concerned with a suspect on the loose. First a school shooting yesterday and now almost an entire family gone. Obviously from what I have read, this was a crime committed by a member of the family. Does anyone know of anymore updates?

I have not found any updates beyond what I've posted, but it's still very early on and police are searching the house tonight after getting a warrant. Hopefully, we'll have more info tomorrow.

The timeline seems off. The police were contacted and checked around the house on Monday, but it wasn’t until Tuesday that they went in with the neighbor.
How could the 17 year old have survived so many hours lying there with such critical injuries?
Agreed. The timeline makes no sense.

The 17 y/o may have heard/seen what was going on and tried to hide or get out of the house, but he wasn't able to get away.
Or, there may be another situation that the investigators hopefully will find out more with the 17 y/o as to what he may have seen happen. Or some other situation may be known soon.
This is a very scary and sad thing to have happened. Hoping the 17 y/o is not seriously injured.
Hoping other relatives are close by who could help the survivor as well as to help the investigators. Also hoping that the family knew/knows people in the neighborhood who could possibly help investigators as well.
Just sad, sad, sad.

The injuries, whether self-inflicted or not, may have BECOME critical because he didn't get immediate medical attention.

WVC Police*

"To briefly recap what has occurred:

After being unable to reach the woman who lived inside the home located on Oxford Way, a family member entered the garage of the home and found one of the children, a 17-year-old male, inside the garage, suffering from a gunshot wound.
The family member called police.
We* arrived and entered the home where we discovered the bodies of the remaining five family members who lived in this home.
We are not releasing the names at this time.
It is our process to make proper notification to next of kin...
We understand media has gained access to some of the names, but we ask you to respect the family and allow them the opportunity to be properly informed.
The bodies inside the house were:
The 42-year-old father of the family,
The 38-year-old mother of the family,
An 11-year-old son,
A 9-year-old daughter,
A 2-year-old daughter
All of the victims appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
Autopsies will confirm the exact cause of death.
The bodies of the mother and the two daughters were located in a bedroom in the upper level of the home.
The bodies of the father and the 11-year-old son were located in the living room of the home.
A small handgun was found under the body of the father.
We believe this was the weapon used in the shootings, however ballistics and forensics investigation will determine that definitively."

I am just so sick over this. To kill your whole family or anyone else and then to kill yourself... just kill yourself if you are done with life... it's so beyond selfish. I don't even know what else to say. The bar is so low now.

A 42-year-old father apparently shot his wife and their four children before shooting himself in their West Valley City home, killing all but a 17-year-old son, police said.

The 17-year-old survivor was found in the garage, Vainuku said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the head. It did not appear that the teen was shot in the garage but managed to make his way there, she said.

Police have found nothing that points to a motive for the shootings, Vainuku added Wednesday.

Five people were found dead in a Utah home after a man apparently shot his wife and four children before killing himself, police said Wednesday. A 17-year-old boy survived but has a severe brain injury. Police believe the shooting in a split-level house in a Salt Lake City suburb happened over the weekend. They had no previous reports of domestic violence or other disturbances involving the family.
