UT - West Valley City, 5 family members dead, 17yo boy wounded, 17 Dec 2024

The 17-year-old son and lone survivor of this incident is no longer in critical condition, but stable after being shot in the head.

She says she has been up to see him at the hospital for the past two days. While Schmidt says the boy is groggy, he has been able to speak a little bit.

"There's someone in there asking questions on his future and what his goals are and he talked about, he said, University of Utah and they said, what do you want to study? and he said lawyer, just simple kind of one word answers," said Schmidt.

She says those (funeral) services are set to take place on Saturday, which is also the 18th birthday of the boy who survived.

Interesting that they arranged the funeral on the boy's 18th birthday. I get it's hard to organize and arrange something like this in the midst of devastation. I just feel so bad for the boy who will always share his birthday with such a sad event. MOO

I was thinking the same thing… they really couldn’t have picked ANY other date?

The fact he is awake and able to talk a little bit is amazing. A true survivor story.
Agreed. I, like probably several of us here on WS, thought that he didn't have much of a chance. So glad he is coming along with his recovery -- a ways to go, I'm sure.
Hoping he can fully recover and be with those he knows.
Just such a very said thing.

maybe I'm jaded as heck but would you want to live through this?

Eta: just wanna say I mean absolute no disrespect to anyone in regards to this comment. I purely meant that I don't think I could do this as a 17/18 yo, doubt I could now as a 38yo either for that matter.

I hope he's a tough cookie. Sending him huge love, he'll need it

I agree with your comment wholeheartedly, and I also understood your original statement to not be a derogatory/negative comment too. I really can’t imagine, what a rough and horrible road ahead.

Whose bright idea was THAT. It's horrible enough what this young man has gone through, and now he'll have to remember his birthday as the day of his family's funerals?

I don't think he's going to remember much of anything for the next while. He's got a traumatic brain injury. I don't think it's going to resonate the same as if he was having to sit through the funeral. He's in hospital, and then rehab, for the foreseeable future. The day that's likely going to be the hardest, should he recover, is the anniversary of the day his father decided to kill them all.

MOO
