WEST VALLEY CITY, April 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — West Valley City has released preliminary information about remains recovered after a group of local children, playing near a canal, spotted a “shoe with a bone sticking out of it.”

“On April 22, 2018 (Sunday), a mother called and reported that her children had been playing in a canal near their house and had seen a shoe with a bone sticking out of it,” said a statement released Friday by West Valley City police.

“The mother said that her children play with a group of kids, ages ranging from 5 to 13 years old, and that they had seen this a week prior and had just told her.”

Officers responded to the canal, in the area of 2700 S and 2500 W, and observed what appeared to be human remains caught in a debris pile in an aqueduct where the canal goes under I-215.

Members of the Utah State Dive Team recovered the remains on the morning of April 23.

Police said the remains appear to belong to an adult male, and officials with the Utah State Office of the Medical Examiner are working to determine the identity.

Detectives, with the assistance of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Cadaver Dog Team, searched the canal for further remains on April 25, but were unsuccessful, the news release said

West Valley, UT (KSL) — A group of children playing soccer went on hunt to find their lost ball, and discovered human remains instead.

“It was creepy, but at the same time it was exciting,” 9-year-old Celso Agular said.
Agular was one of five children, ages 5 to 13, playing soccer outside a trailer home near 2700 S. 2500 West, when the ball was kicked over a fence, he said.
“When we kicked it went all the way into the river,” Agular said.

That “river” was actually a canal that channels into West Valley’s Decker Lake. Agular and his friends said it looked like a “shoe with a bone sticking out of it,” but weren’t sure if it was real.

“We told our biggest brother. He said that it could be something from Halloween, and he didn’t believe us, so we didn’t tell anybody,” Agular said.
A couple of days later, Agular said he told his mother what he saw, and she went to investigate. She discovered the bones were real, then called 911, the 9-year-old said.
Officers responded and found what appeared to be human remains caught in a pile of debris in the middle of the canal where the aqueduct flows under I-215 and feeds into Decker Lake, West Valley City Police Department spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

I only found two men in Namus who went missing from West Valley City. They're both teenagers though, so if the report of "adult male" is right, they wouldn't fit.

Carlos Garces, 15 https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/42819/1/ missing since last November

Semisi Siaki, 17 https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/41364/2/ missing since last September

Utah didn't list any missing men from this year.

If they only have a foot would they be able to tell the different between a teenager and an adult?

This man is not in NamUs and I can’t find anything about him being identified - there was another body of a female found around the same time who ended up being Cami Shepherd - Police: Body found in West Valley City identified as woman missing since February

Another body was also found in the canal the next month - Richard Anthony Byrd. School kids find body in West Valley City canal

Therefore it is REALLY hard to find info on this case.

They were doing DNA analysis last time it was reported: Kids playing near canal in WVC find human remains

Similarly to Byrd, his body was caught in debris :( Kids find human remains in West Valley City canal

April 2018 is only about four or five months ago, so they are quite likely still waiting on the DNA.

Couldn't find any updates. Remains don't show up in Namus.
