Utah woman arrested for torturing, killing family cat in front of children

According to a probable cause statement, Unified Police officers were called to a residence in Holladay where Borg's son and daughter were found crying in September 2018. The children told a responding officer that Borg beat the family cat "over and over again" and snapped its neck in front of them.

The responding officer arranged the children to be transported away from the home when she walked throughout the home to further investigate. When the officer arrived in the yard, she found a dead cat and Borg covered in blood. The officer also found multiple broken items and blood throughout the home.

According to the probable cause statement, Borg's daughter told the detective that she heard the cat meowing and saw her mother hold the cat by its legs, pounding it repeatedly on a table. The daughter tried to save the cat, but Borg bit her daughter on the arm - bruising her arm - before snapping the cat's neck.

Borg was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Friday but has since been released. Her first court appointment is scheduled for Jan 29.

Those poor kids. :( This is just heartbreaking:

Police: Woman charged for beating, snapping neck of family cat in front of her children
Police said the daughter told them her mother "goes crazy" nearly every night. The girl has since been diagnosed with acute stress disorder due to experiencing multiple traumatic events inside their home and a therapist told police the children had suffered "multiple types of abuse/trauma at the hands of their mother".

I was about to post that the children have probably suffered at this monster's hands when I saw your link.

QED.

This is hideous. If she abuses a cat, what does she do to her children?

I am not an advocate of foster care, but I don't think that these kids should be placed with anyone in this family until they are investigated.

I saw the heading and am too upset to read about the actions of this monster.
Hope she is severely punished, obtains a criminal charge and goes to prison.
Throughout her life, I hope it is remembered how evil this creep is.
Hope a law will be passed to help these poor defenseless animals.

Having spent 30 years as a Police Officer and 26 of those investing all manner of serious crime Rape, Robbery, Child abuse, Domestic violence, Murder and gangland Crime, I have to say that this is one of the worst things I’ve heard/read in a very long time.
Truly awful for those poor children and something that will stay in their memories forever. I hope that they receive help to get through all that they have suffered at the hands of Mum.
OT but what is Mum wearing in the picture of her with the camel? It almost resembled a circus performance costume???

Utah mother allegedly snapped family cat's neck on table in front of her two kids after ferociously beating it
Utah mother has been charged after allegedly snapping a family cat’s neck in front of her two crying children in September last year.

Ariane Christine Borg, 38, of Holladay, was charged with multiple counts of child abuse and third-degree torture of a companion animal in the 3rd District Court, ABC4 reported yesterday. She was suffering from mental illness at the time, according to her lawyer.

Probable cause documents said the woman’s children, 10-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, told police their mother had been holding the cat's legs and smacking it off a table, before snapping the cat’s neck and discarding it outside. The daughter was allegedly bruised while trying to stop the killing.

Local media reported that cops found the home in disarray with blood stains visible. The dead cat was in the front yard. The children said the mother had beat the cat “over and over again.”

According to KSTU (Fox13), the children were interviewed by a detective on November 29. Borg's daughter reportedly told the detective that her mother "goes crazy" nearly every night.

ABC4 reported that the mother had signs of “self inflicted stab wounds” on her body. Local media reported Sunday that one of the children had received counseling for trauma.

Borg’s defense attorney, Steve Burton, has criticized the local media coverage of his client, stressing she has been through “months of intensive treatment” since the incident. Burton said that Borg had been making “extraordinary efforts to become well” and has therapy five times a week. Her medications are now “closely overseen by a psychiatrist,” he added.

The attorney further said that Borg’s medications had been adjusted two months prior to the incident, which caused her mental health to begin “spiraling downward.”

“Because of the changes in medication and a lack of mental health treatment, Ariane suffered a critical manic episode,” Burton said. “She believed that she and her family were being attacked and she injured herself and a beloved family pet while suffering from those delusions.”

A Utah woman was charged with snapping her cat’s neck in front of her children. Her lawyer is slamming the ‘system’ that ‘re-victimizes’ her.
“In September, the week before she was arrested, the police were called multiple times to assist with her mental health crisis but no meaningful help was provided. Because of the changes in medication and a lack of mental health treatment, Ariane suffered a critical manic episode. She believed that she and her family were being attacked and she injured herself and a beloved family pet while suffering from those delusions.

“Luckily, she did not end her own life, but spent several days in the hospital and multiple weeks being treated for her injuries and illness. Doctors were able to correct her diagnosis and treatment, and since being released in mid-October, she has returned to being the good, kind person that she was before.”

Burton said his client has been responding positively to treatments since October. He called her arrest “devastating,” according to the Desert News.

“It is disappointing to see that after all we have learned about mental illness, our system still re-victimizes those who are struggling, and increases the risk that they will suffer further setbacks," he said. "We hope that those who see this story will urge law enforcement, prosecutors, the media and the Legislature to improve the way we treat mental illness so we can help those who are sick before they reach a point of crisis and tragedy."
