University student accused in Radford homicide case

"... A Radford University student was charged Thursday with killing a classmate — Radford’s first murder charge in eight years, the city prosecutor said.

Luisa Ines Tudela Harris Cutting, 21, of Jeffersonton, in Culpeper County, was charged with second-degree murder. ...

... The victim was identified Friday morning by Radford police as Alexa Cannon, 20, the daughter of a Roanoke family, and like Cutting, a student at Radford University. ...

...When a police officer asked what was going on, the woman said “I killed her,” the search warrant said. The officer looked into the apartment and saw a woman with multiple stab wounds lying on the floor. The woman on the floor had a butcher knife sticking out of her mouth, the search warrant said. ..."

Virginia college student Luisa Cutting charged with murder of best friend Alexa Cannon | Daily Mail Online

DM has lots of photos of both beautiful young women, often together even on vacation. Best friends since they were freshmen in 2016, but only started sharing an apartment together this year. Victim stabbed 30-40 times. LE seized some drug paraphernalia from the apartment.

*

This case is interesting because it is so rare for this kind of murder to occur between two young girls who have bright futures ahead of them. What is the motive here?

After the frenzied attack, the final assault on the body was to leave the large knife in the victim's mouth. It's symbolic or poetic for "I never want to hear your voice again" or "I am shutting you up forever".

:(
Some of these crimes are just so baffling, especially the murders of someone who loves the perp.
Most people seem to be thinking jealousy of some kind.. ?
She sure must have had something brewing in her mind to go off like that imo. But since she seemed coherent at the police's arrival I'm going with drugs not being the main cause, but maybe a contributing factor if that's a thing. But it's just a guess.

My hometown. There usually nothing this big in the city. With exception of course of Steven King killing Gina Marie Hall. That was back in 1980.

Tragedies like this that happen at college chill me to the core. I remember sending my own kiddos off to college with huge dreams and great expectations, not fear of anything horrible like this happening. And yet time after time I learn of our best and brightest losing their lives in some horrible incident. This is just so awful. I wonder if mental illness played a role in this inexplicable crime. I am so sad for all who knew and loved both these young women.

Idk if they were roommates, but it reminds me of my daughter, same age, also in college. She's now by herself in an apartment and I couldn't be happier her roomie moved out. They'd been friends for 3 years before moving in together and only then came out roomie's true character. I don't think she'd be capable of something like this, but that's what people always say, so it's always in the back of my mind (I've been around WS long enough).
What an utter psycho attack... what a crying shame.

wow...check this out:

⚓Alexa Cannon⚓️ on Instagram: “I met this girl two years ago online and somehow we ended up living across from each other for a year, this summer she was equivalent to my…”

instagram of the victim. She speaks about her roomie, who killed her, in a post on her instagram:

I met this girl two years ago online and somehow we ended up living across from each other for a year, this summer she was equivalent to my mom in Cancun. And unimaginably she still puts up with me and now we’re living together next year. Love you more Lu and everyone pray that we don’t kill each other this year. ❤️

Someone has to say it:
What an absolutely ironic, chilling, unfortunate last name the accused/admitted killer has!
It has no bearing on this case, just a SMH detail in the big picture of this unspeakable tragedy.

So the victim Cannon called 911 and was found with her phone in her hand. And the suspect Cutting's phone was not at the scene.

And when the cops arrived, Cutting turned around and put her hands behind her back, for the handcuffs, and said ' arrest me, I did it.' <<or something like that...

If it was a fight over a boyfriend or rent money, I think she'd have run off, tried to get away. But something about her behavior in the after math makes me think Cutting might have been 'obsessed, inappropraitely' with her roomie.

Leaving the knife sticking out of her victims mouth? That is very personal.

here is there victims description of their relationship:

wow, it almost sounds like Cannon might have been stalked by Cutting. 'Met her online and we 'somehow' ended up living across from each other for a year...'

That^^^ sounds like Cutting met Cannon online then infiltrated her life, moving across the hall, then eventually becoming her roommate.

And the killer was 'mothering' her victim in their Cancun summer break. College girls need their mother when heartbroken or bullied by mean girls. How convenient for Cutting that she could be there as a shoulder to cry on. It makes me feel like this 'new best friend' was possibly manipulating her victim, even back then.

And the final sentence is kind of chilling;..."and everyone pray that we don’t kill each other this year. ❤️"

So their friendship was pretty volatile. Her new best friend, who out of nowhere became her neighbor, then her roomie, was her rock, her shoulder to lean on, but it was volatile enough that one could jokingly pray they'd not be homicide victims. Yikes

“Cannon’s family wants Radford to move forward. Sam and Cathy, Cannon’s parents, said positivity is the best way to honor their daughter’s memory. “Love is the only path to true freedom,” Cathy Cannon wrote on the back of the program for her daughter’s memorial services.”

“The Cannon family asked that we include Luisa Cutting and her family in our prayers — they need them during this time,” Anderson, the pastor, told those in attendance. After the services, people gathered around the Cannon family in the church’s reception area. Sam and Cathy Cannon hugged and shook hands for more than an hour.”

I interpret Cannon's statement a good deal differently (less ominously): many college-bound HS seniors get acquainted with their future classmates (and often their dorm mates/roommates as well) online, both on their school's "official" social media networks and SM groups that are privately organized for incoming students or current students at a school.

The "mothering" comment I took to mean that Cutting was on the lookout for Cannon's wellbeing when they were abroad; I am a college professor and when I hear female students say about other female friends "She was totally like my mom at the party last night," my understanding is that the friend was diligently watching out for them and keeping them from doing anything stupid while inebriated and/or being preyed upon by others. (It's still possible that Cutting took this "mothering" behavior to an extreme, but among American college women a moderately-practiced form of it is pretty common behavior [thank heavens]).

The throwaway comment about "killing each other": 100% agree it's super-creepy in hindsight, but the phrase is one I've heard used even by people in very stable, non-volatile friendships and romantic relationships. In my experience it's been said as a way to downplay or make light of a petty disagreement, or as a way to acknowledge that the friends/partners have strongly different perspectives/personalities. Of course, this doesn't preclude the possibility that Cannon meant it more literally...

The Cannon family is being incredibly gracious and forgiving in the aftermath of this terrible tragedy. They are asking for prayers for their daughter’s (alleged) killer and family and it is amazingly kind and compassionate. God bless them for this extraordinary example of forgiveness.
