Guilty plea expected in Radford University student murder case

A former Radford University student accused in the January slaying of her roommate is expected to plead guilty in the case Monday, according to Radford’s prosecutor.

City Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Rehak wrote in a news release Sunday that Cutting is expected to enter the plea to the charges she faces.

Contacted Sunday, Rehak said that at Monday’s hearing, he would present a plea agreement worked out with the defense.

*Hearing (@ 9:30am ET) - VA – Alexa Cannon (20) (Jan. 24, 2019, Radford University) – *Luisa Ines Tudela Harris Cutting (21) arrested & charged (1/24/19) with 2nd degree murder. Held without bond.
Confessed to the crime.
1/25/19: Appointed an attorney. 4/11/19 Update: Preliminary hearing set for 6/13. 6/13/19: Preliminary hearing continued to 9/5.
9/5/19 Update: Cutting waived her right to a preliminary hearing while in court Thursday, the day the hearing was to have been held. She has another grand jury court date set for Sept. 13; a trial date will be set then. Her attorney, Blair Howard, says Cutting suffers from a mental illness, but isn't commenting on whether she has had a mental evaluation.
9/13/19 Update: Grand Jury returns True Bill. Next Hearing on 10/11.
10/6/19 Update: Cutting is expected to agree with a plea deal on a hearing on Monday, 10/7 per DA.

Luisa Cutting, 21, was then sentenced to 40 years in prison for the second-degree murder of Alexa Cannon.

Former Radford University student 'did cocaine with the devil' before murdering her roommate

At times during those interviews she was incoherent, but at other points, she would be lucid. She couldn't recall certain parts of the incident or the hours leading up to the murder.

During the interviews, Cutting was praying, mentioning the apocalypse and saying that she did cocaine with the devil.

Rehak said that there was some evidence that Cutting was reciting "Hail Mary" in Spanish over and over.

He said that Cutting did express some remorse for her actions and had knowledge of what happened.

She also admitted to taking a combination of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, mushrooms and cocaine the night before she murdered Cannon.

Luisa Cutting pleads guilty to Radford murder of Alexa Cannon; sentenced to 20 years


Accepting a plea agreement’s suggested sentence, Judge Joey Showalter imposed a total of 40 years in prison, to be suspended after Cutting serves 20 years. He said that Cutting will be supervised by the probation office for 10 years after her release.

Showalter ordered that Cutting have no contact with Cannon’s family and undergo any mental health treatment suggested by authorities. He also ordered that she repay $3,686.76 to the Virginia Victims Fund.
