LE will not comment on whether someone was with her at the gas station.

Her phone more than likely stopped working at or near the gas station.

In the pics, it looks like that since her car is out of view (cropped out?), that she was parked at the pumps and likely going in to pay for gas.

There are more than likely cameras located at the pumps themselves. Why not release one or more pics from those?

I think someone could have been with her, or someone decided they were going to be with her. At the gas station.

It's difficult to tell anything from a photo. But she sort of looks tense to me. Like she's nervous about something. Just my observation, I guess.

Don't think she was under duress at that time or she would have made that known to whomever was at the station. However, she could have had a bad vibe about someone in the parking lot. Perhaps a man cat called her/stared at her and made her uncomfortable or something.

Hello, all. This is my first time posting to Websleuths. Please be patient with me as I am not used to posting in discussion boards. :blushing:

A little intro about myself and my interest in the AM case. I am originally from Lynchburg, VA (lived there for 18 years). I have been living in Charlottesville, VA (except for one year) since I came to college at the University of Virginia back in 1990. My family still lives in Lynchburg. I say all of this because I am VERY familiar with the areas that everyone is talking about. I use Route 29 2-3 times per month when I go visit my family. I became interested in this case on Sunday, August 4 when I received a FB notification from a friend from Lynchburg who is Alexis' cousin. I immediately started online searching to see what the media was saying, but at that time, found nothing in relation to the case. I did, however, find the Vine, FB, and Twitter accounts that have been mentioned. I told her cousin that I would be on the lookout here in Cville because I had noticed that one of her Vine vids was take at a restaurant/bar that is close to where I live here in Cville. I thought that, perhaps, she had just run off with some friends without notifying anyone. I also thought that as a fellow African American, that perhaps I would know some places where "we" frequent and would be on the look out. So, that's how I got interested in this case.

I've enjoyed reading about all of your theories; many of which I too have thought about. There is one thing that I would like to say, just to get my feet wet. I believe the location of Alexis' car in reference (distance wise) to where her uncle and grandmother live, might be misleading. Her uncle states that they live about 20 yards away from where her car is found. (http://www.newsplex.com/home/headli...to-Her-Disappearance-Continues-218794041.html). IMO, the distance between the two is much greater. In this article, her uncle is quoted as saying that "he and Alexis' grandmother live together at Rio Hill Apartments, which he estimates to be "about 20 yards" from the location where the car Murphy was driving was located on Tuesday night." If you look at the Google maps that others have posted of the location where the car was found and the surrounding apartment complexes, it's somewhat visible. Her uncle and grandmother live at Rio Hill Apartments which, in the Google maps image have brownish roof tops. The Arden Place apartments have a more greyish roofing. If you look at the image you see that the Arden Place apartments are in between where her car was found and the apartments where her relatives live. I was a little thrown off at first with the talks of the dogs following a scent from her car to the clubhouse at Arden place and then different talks about her grandmother living in some apartments and her uncle living in some apartments. I thought her grandmother lived at Arden Place and that her uncle lived in other apartments. Knowing that Arden Place are upscale, fairly new apartments, I was interested in an older African American woman being about to afford them or wanting to live somewhere like that. when I found out that they lived at Rio Hill Apartments, it made more sense to me. IMO, it is something to think about the possibility that the scent of someone going from her car to Rio Hill Apartments could be broken or obstructed in some way at Arden Place apartments clubhouse area, say a pool in that clubhouse if someone knew someone else who had previously provided them with the access cose to utilize the facilities (a pool or workout room). This is just my opinion and my own mental musings.

I’ve worked on cases as other law enforcement officers have, where because you get out there early and fast and hard, you actually recover the victim alive,” McNamara said. “As an investigator you never set out with the mindset that the victim is dead. You set out with the mindset that she’s alive. We’re going to recover her, we’re going to rescue her.”

Has anyone been reminded of the teen that went missing shortly just before Morgan H? I don't think she has been found. Iirc, the last sighting of her was at a gas station in either Orange, Louisa or Greene Co. Samantha Clark...still missing :(

Samantha Clarke has a thread on WS:
[ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114722"]VA VA - Samantha Ann Clarke, 19, Orange, 13 Sept 2010 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community[/ame]

This is the most recent article I can find about Samantha's disappearance; it talks about a suspect: http://www.readthehook.com/108360/l...amily-mourns-suspect-claims-police-harassment

Lauren Smith, who went missing from Madisom County, VA in 2011 also has a thread: [ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155559"]VA VA - Lauren Susann Smith, 22, Madison County, 21 Nov 2011 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community[/ame]

I used to think maybe Samantha & Lauren's cases were related & also related to Morgan's but after reading the 2012 Hook article linked above about Samantha's I'm not so sure I think that anymore. And there's really very little info about Lauren's case. And I don't know if Alexis's disappearance is related to any of these cases, either.

Looking at this map, the clubhouse to those apartments is quite a ways away from where her car was purportedly abandoned. I'm assuming it's by the pool. If they traced her scent all the way there, then that's a small hike.

I also noticed the retention pond just south of the pool and clubhouse. I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. I wonder if they are draining it.

  • #632
I agree Tonto! Did you also see the river? (back a ways but needs searched)

  • #633
Where is the clubhouse on the map? It's right near the pool, right? The smaller, house sized looking building?

  • #634
OMG. And there is a paved nature trail behind those apartments that goes directly from where the car was, by the pool, and right to that pond. The path goes from the parking lot.

here's another thought to, talking of possible lures that she may have fallen for, from either man or woman... seeing how beautiful she is... and her fashion interest... modeling? 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 question and her answer:

Would u ever model for Kloud Clothing?
Yes.

here is the link to Kloud Clothing... www.kloudclothing.com

bumping for tonto. (did you see this?)

could she have said let's shoot some photos by the pool?

just a thought.

It's possible as an underlying motive, but I think if they were by the pool they would have been seen or heard. If she indeed headed in that direction, then I think someone led her there by force and used that paved path in the wooded area that bypasses the apartments altogether. It goes right to that retention pond, plus it continues on to the highway so it gives a potential perp an 'easy' escape where he doesn't have to backtrack.

This is all speculation of course, but man that path goes almost directly from where she parked and would be the perfect cover for someone out to do something evil.

searched NAMUS for missing women in VA since 1999 and came up with 40 results. Of course not all are linked and maybe even none are. I'm not familair with Virginia so I have no clue which of these are near where Alexis went missing from, but if anyone who is familiar with VA wants to go look, you just go to www.findthemissing.org, click on missing persons, click on search at the top left of the page, and set the case info to females in Virginia with the last known alive date as 1999 (or earlier/later if you prefer).

There are quite a few women missing from Newport News, which I think is a couple of hours from Charlottesville. Henrico & Norfolk also seem to have a relatively high number of missing women. I think Henrico is a little over an hour from Charlottesville and Norfolk is two and a half hours away. (All my times are based on google, so maybe a local would know better).

Do you also have a standard way of putting together a case timeline?

  • #639
I have read two stories about when the car was parked.
One said it was found on Monday
The other said someone stated it wasn't there til Tues morning

Does anyone know which it is?
Was it there all along or did it arrive on Tues?

  • #640
For some reason (maybe it's my OCD wanting things to be in neat little boxes), the finding of her car has bothered me. Can someone please help me understand the timeline of that? Please tell me if this is somewhat correct:

On Tuesday night at around 8pm, a family friend finds the car parked in the Carmike theater parking lot (http://www.blueridgelife.com/2013/0...teen-was-driving-alexis-murphy-still-missing/)

OR

Sometime that night a "tipster" (which wasn't being reported as a friend of the family) called into authorities that they had found the car (http://www.wset.com/story/23062096/search-for-alexis-murphy-continues)

That same night at around 9pm, authorities rush to the scene.

Around 10:30 that same night, K-9 dogs pick up a scent that leads them to Arden Place Apartments (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_...in-movie-theater-parking-lot-authorities-say/)

Around 11:30 that same night, the car is towed away from the premises http://www.newsplex.com/home/headli...-Car-Found-in-Albemarle-County-218610961.html)

A little before midnight that same night, investigators leave for the night and will resume the search the next morning.

I have not understood this protocol yet and hope that some of you can ease my mind. I don't understand why, when there was a scent detected, every single apartment, nook and cranny in that complex as well as the one behind it (and even the ones behind THAT one) weren't searched. The media (which is all that I have to go on) made it sound like the scent stopped so they just packed it up to go home. I read that her Nelson county family didn't know about the car being found as they found out later through social media (http://www.wset.com/story/23073596/...on-third-full-day-of-search-for-alexis-murphy), but what does everyone think they did as far as her uncle being RIGHT there where it was found. Did they tell him and the grandmother? I just don't understand authorities' protocol. I guess I thought if they had a scent they would stay out there more hours than they did to try to find out more (knock on doors, etc).
