#PressRelease Child Death Investigation

On August 11, 2018, officers responded to the Lynchburg General Hospital for an injured child who had been brought there by her mother. Based on initial findings, members of the Criminal Investigations Division responded and began to look into the events that preceded the child’s arrival at the hospital.

Due to the extent of her injuries, the 22-month-old child was then transported to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA for further treatment. Based on the preliminary investigation and the extent of the child’s injuries, Detective Tucker sought charges on the child’s mother for Felony Child Abuse (VA Code: 18.2-371.1).

Fantasia Ashante Lane, a 20-year-old resident of Lynchburg, was arrested and transported to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail where she was held without bond.

On August 16, 2018, the 22-month-old child succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Additional charges are now pending in this case.

Lynchburg woman indicted on felony homicide charge in death of toddler

A grand jury has indicted a 20-year-old Lynchburg woman accused in the death of her 22-month-old child.

Fantasia Ashante Lane is now charged with felony homicide, child abuse or neglect causing serious injury, and child endangerment.

Lane is scheduled for a 3-day jury trial set to begin on March 25 at 9 a.m. in the Lynchburg Circuit Court.

Family says Lynchburg child death could have been prevented

The family says Amarah was entered into foster care at three weeks old after reports of abuse. Woody didn't find out he was the baby's father until months after that. He lives in Roanoke and his paternity was proven in May of 2017.

The Lynchburg Department of Social Services is under fire after 22-month-old Amarah Lane died of alleged abuse last week. The baby's paternal family is now considering taking legal action against DSS which they said failed the child on every level

Court documents detail Lynchburg CPS care of Amarah Lane

Lynchburg CPS requested approval of an emergency removal due concerns for the safety and well-being of Amarah in November 2016.

Papers also show the psychological evaluation Fantasia was given by doctors.

They said she was suffering from depression, an unstable mood, suicidal behaviors, and constant inner turmoil.

Toddler who was victim of alleged child abuse is laid to rest

According to the Woody family, officials at the department planned the funeral arrangements. They say officials ignored their wishes to have Amarah buried in Roanoke, instead of burying her in Lynchburg.



"You know, I've worked very hard to everything they asked of me through the Department of Social Services. I had the room ready for her," says Sonya Woody, Amarah's grandmother.
