What's the point of including the alien in your hypothetical? I'd be interested in knowing what she says, depending on whether there is a similar societal structure/history of conflict and engagement in the alien culture, or not.

Well computer scientists like to think about boundary cases...

Even in the case of the alien, they might be able to discern some things just from common structural forms. For example, if they also had flags or banners in their culture they might be able to determine that the people were carrying such items. It seems plausible that a generally humanoid form of intelligent life might also invent the use of banners and flags as military and ritual identifiers as an example. Depending, they might have some rather unusual interpretations of the picture. Of course if the alien culture in question is different enough, they might not even comprehend any of the elements of this. Consider an insectoid race without individuality. The point is these cultural and other differences would not make their interpretation of the image correct.

Well don't stop there. Why, exactly?

Hopefully Pax will chime in here, but the Swastika was chosen in part because of the Nazi's theory about the origins of the Germanic peoples in the Aryans of India. The swastika was used by the Thule Society as well and this use was due to the connection with the symbol's use in the Hindu & Buddhist traditions.

I can pretty definitively say Central Virginia is in the North at least temporarily. I shoveled about a foot of snow of of my front walk a few hours ago and it's already 6 inches deep again. It's supposed to keep coming all day tomorrow.

I'm glad I live in Maine. I would hate to have to deal with the storms you get down there in "Snow Country"! Well, I'm on my way out for a short hike today. Can't decide if I'll really need this LLBean vest or not....

Yes this is correct as far as I understand it, the reason they chose that symbol.

The Nazi's spent a lot of time and money reseaching India and Tibet and trying to follow up on a lot of Blavatsky's ideas of the lost Aryans of Atlantis.

Check out the book "The spear of destiny" sometime.

Meanwhile I really am in birkenstocks shorts and a t shirt soaking up this Arizona sun.

In a few weeks I will be going to Southwest Africa for a bit. It will be fairly cold here in Atlanta where I leave winter behind and dip below the equator where the seasons are reversed.

It'll be hot. Real hot. Maybe as high as 104 degrees F on some days !

Spent yesterday at the beach. Not really swimming weather with temperatures in the 60s but a good day to get sandy and check out some waves.

Don't forget the gang "tear" tattoos!

Any idea what that is on the raised arm of the guy in the front?

It appears to be the number "4" but it is hard to say whether this is some sort of artifact just from an online digital image.

When his arm is down, it would be inverted. More likely to read that way.

(observation tangentially related to my being a linguist)

True...

I'm still wondering if this is an artifact or might actually have been written onto the original photograph however.

It certainly doesn't resemble any images of KKK tattoos I've been able to find.

See for example http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/default_graphics.asp

It looks like it's there-there to me, but what do I know?

Lowercase "h"...? What would that mean? A single letter in such a context wouldn't be in lowercase, I don't think.

No idea. Maybe it's an unfinished "K" or maybe an injury that looks like a tattoo.

ETA: apparently Angelina Jolie and Howard Stern's wife both have the letter "h" tattooed on their arms. FWIW.

WHAT?!

What the hell does their "h" mean??

Have you heard it's an "h" or do you think it looks like one but could be something else?

Yea probably some sort of Hebrew or Chinese symbol, those hollywood celebs have been getting in to Kabbalah a lot lately and many people like Chinese symbol tats.

Apparently Angelina's "h" is for Timothy Hutton (who I went to high school with) and her brother James Haven.

Stern's wife apparently has it for "Howard".

Now if it turns out that Anna Nicole had one too or maybe Lady GaGa I'm going to start worrying.

Ha!

I think it's bizarre that Angelina and Stern's wife both used lowercase h for that. Especially since it's for a proper name, even. I'd think it weird if just one of them did, but I really think it's weird that they both would.

Do you think your going to high school with Timothy Hutton could have anything to do with it? Maybe not....

Could also be a rune...

The rune "cen" is sometimes written in a manner that resembles an "h"...

runes.gif

Cen is the torch and is associated with the goddess Freyja:

ken.jpg

"Cen is the rune of the brightly burning torch that lights up the hall in the evening, whose flames represent the safe, tempered fire of the hearth. Cen depicts the magickal-sexual heat of the goddess Freyja, which slumbers within ourselves, waiting to be kindled. This feminine power is termed Seid-fire or Seith-Fyr, and is the creative force of the Lady.... the word Shaman (once written as Flaman), means "keeper of the burning fires," or "keeper of the flame." The Cen rune is a magickal heat, begetting and shaping new creations, underlying all acts of art, craft, and magick."
