Police are asking for help finding a man whom they say last was seen on January 16.

Officers believe Daniel Wallis is driving a black 1996 Nissan Sentra with VA tag JTH-8926.

More than 20 family members and friends spent time Sunday searching for Wallis.

His cousin, John Patrick, came back to Hampton Roads from Charlotte, North Carolina to help look for Wallis.

“We’re holding out hope for a happy ending to this, and, uh, I know I really am," said*Patrick. He told 13News Now that,*so far, *people checked more than 50 spots for*Wallis. Those places included parks, hotels, and businesses.

In addition to posting flyers across Hampton Roads, they have turned to social media to help in the search. There have been pictures shared on Facebook hundreds of times.

Patrick said his cousin was feeling depressed before he disappeared.

Per a poster on the AWARE Foundation he left home on the morning of 17 January with a sleeping bag and 'some gear' in his car. No word on where they believe he was going. This is in my part of the state and there is very little info on this.

The Missing Pieces Network has a bit more. He was last seen in the Indian River neighborhood of Chesapeake and he left without his phone and wallet.

He must be a camper or have supplies for camping. Northwest River Park is about 40 minutes from Hampton Road. I wonder if he has ever been there or if a search has happened there yet? It would be my first search location....

NW River park is to the south of me. Not much there in the way of roads to drive on and most of the areas are picnic or equestrian areas. With his car, he would have to park in one of the few areas there are to park including in front and across from the ranger station/store. The park closes at dusk and the rangers, who work for the City of Chesapeake, usually check the lots before closing. If he went there I suspect he would have been located already. NW River is the largest of the city parks, but well patroled. There is the Cavalier Wildlife Mgt area in southern Chesapeake which is not so well patrolled, but the game wardens do periodic checks there and I believe camping is not legal.

What we don't know is whether or not he camps out or hikes and where he normally does this. If he is camping and has a tent, I strongly suspect he might be out of the area possibly in a wildlife area that is not regularly patrolled. Almost all the parks here, including Virginia Beach and Suffolk, close at sunset and the park rangers check the parking areas. If this guy has not been found he is in an area where an overnight camper would not be unusual and an area that is not regularly patrolled. A lot of the people I know around here that hike and overnight camp go the mountains 4-6 hours to the west. I have one friend that does go out there on the Appalachian Trail and the trails off the AT year round. BUT he and his friends are very experienced hikers with experiences in the Rocky Mountains, including Glacier NP, and they have the winter clothing and equipment. I highly doubt this guy has gone there, but would hope county sheriff's throughout the state and NC are on the look out for this car.

It's not bitterly cold, but temps today have dropped to the mid-40's and are not going higher. Saturday - 50's thru 60's temps - was good weather. But it rained all day yesterday and is going to be the same today thru at least tomorrow morning.

The FB page, Help Find Daniel Wallis, has a recent post stating that they have covered all the parks and forests and talked to the rangers. No tips have been called in and no leads from banking or credit card activity. They've even contacted salvage yards for Daniel's car. Now they are going to start on homeless shelters.

It's hard to be positive when there are no leads from bank accounts or credit cards. But he may have a new credit card the family doesn't know about. I do see that the flyer has been updated with the correct license number of the car and it shows a date and a time he was last seen - 17 Jan 2018 at 0300. When I first in this area and single I would take trips out of the area I would leave early in the morning to get a jump on the day. Leaving at 3 or 4 in the morning I could be in the mountains by 0800-0930. I wonder if that is what Daniel did. Of course, he did this on a Wednesday and traffic here with 3-4 Navy carriers in port recently has started backing up 0500 in the morning so he could have been trying to beat the traffic.

Not what we were hoping for. With the camping gear, I was hoping he would be found on the Outer Banks or in the mountains of VA or NC. This is sad.
