Families of missing teens search for answers

Though their stories may differ, the families of the missing bear a similar scar.

[snip]

Lolita Smith drives back and forth to Charlottesville City Council meetings asking for more efforts to find her grandson, Dashad Smith. Jostling down the road, the tassel from Dashad’s graduation cap dangles from the rearview mirror, marking the pride she felt the day he graduated from high school.

[snip]

The Charlottesville Police Department headed up the investigation, discovering through phone records that Dashad communicated with a friend, 22-year-old Erik McFadden, multiple times that day.

Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts declined to say whether McFadden is a suspect in Dashad’s disappearance. The 22-year-old remains wanted for questioning by the Charlottesville Police Department.

“They can’t find my grandson and they can’t find Erik,” Lolita Smith said.

Courteney Stuart
12/11/13 at 12:40 PM

Snipped and BBM:

Preceding a moment of silence, Shavers read off the names of nine victims, all of whom have disappeared in the past four years along a path that roughly follows Route 29 from Northern Virginia south to the Roanoke area: Morgan Harrington, Alexis Murphy, Cassandra Morton, Samantha Clarke, Jamisha Gilbert, Dashad “Sage” Smith, Heather Hodges, Bethany Decker and Cara Marie Holley.

Is West Main Street a busy area on a Tuesday night?
I've been trying to figure out what time Sage was last seen and was supposed to go out. If it was earlier in the evening, when people were getting off work, West Main would have been pretty busy. But the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, with most students gone, I'm guessing it was a ghost town after 9 p.m. Looking at Wunderground's weather history, I see it got down to 32 that night but didn't rain. An unusually warm November weeknight might have brought more people out, but probably not 30's and 40's.

West Main is an interesting area. As you head farther west and get closer to UVA, it gets more populated and more university-oriented. Around the Amtrak station, there are some fairly nice restaurants targeted at the downtown and university crowd, and a little more off the road, housing projects.

Does anyone know what size shoe Sage wore? Did he wear Mizuno running shoes?

  • #113
The reason I ask, is because human remains were found near a small town in Canada, just off an island on Lake Ontario, directly across from Rochester, New York.

It was a male foot in a female running shoe.

Has the race been released?

I have a friend who knows Sage's family (not well) and some of her friends. Would it be appropriate to ask her to ask them if Sage was known to own similar shoes and/or socks?

Sage didn't have much money, and I haven't heard anything about her being a runner. I'd be surprised if she owned high-end running shoes made by a less common Canadian brand, but she could have found them in a thrift store. There are certainly plenty of affluent runners in this area.

The Mizuno brand of running shoe is Japanese, not Canadian. High end for sure, trendy. It wouldn't hurt to post the picture of the shoe and sock on her Facebook site, maybe someone will recognize it. Obviously not the wanted outcome, but, doesn't hurt the cause. I will post it here just in case a member of that fb group is able to post it. Thanks

Here is the female shoe with sock, size 11, that was found with a male foot in it. This Japanese high end Mizuno running shoe came out in the summer of 2011.

I posted a link to the article, which includes the photos, to the "Find Dashad 'Sage' Smith" Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/FindSageSmith

It was awkward writing the post, partly because the public belief is that Sage will be found alive, and partly because I didn't know which name or pronoun to use. The page always uses Dashad, and I finally found a post from awhile back that said "him," so that's what I went with.

Is anything else known about Erik?

I'm trying to quote neverletgo's post from Dec. 21 but somehow when I do the quote in it won't appear.

I wonder if all those disappearances are connected. It seems like the area is a common denominator. It could be a single perp or more than one perp taking that road regularly.

If Sage ran into such a perp, then maybe this could explain Erik's disappearance as well IMO. The perp may have tried to get Erik out of the way to get to Sage.

I wonder why Erik isn't listed as missing as well. It makes me think that both LE and his family believe he's on the run. It seems very suspicious.

Were Sage and Erik friends? Did they know each other from school?

In regards to the retweets...Dave Matthews from DMB is from Charlottesville. I bet he would help!! :)

This would be worth a try. According to Wikipedia, one of their back-up singers and the drummer are from Charlottesville as well. It seems like the city has many notable people - Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Tom Peloso of Modest Mouse, among others. I don't know about their personal lives so I don't know if they'd be willing to help out or if they have twitters but if they do that would be worth a try IMO.

Jessica Lange is from Charlottesville as well and I think she'd help out. I don't think she has a twitter but maybe she'd be ok with spreading the word somehow. There's fan twitters and maybe they'd be willing to tweet about Sage and get the word out.

I agree, Veidt.
I really wish we knew more about Eric and how Eric knew Sage, etc.
