Found Deceased Va - Denise Martin, 22, Virginia Beach, 19 June 2018

I would find it hard to believe that she committed suicide. She advocated for suicide prevention on her facebook account recently. I really do hope she's ok and alive and just took sometime for herself. I just don't see suicide here, especially if she spoke to her boyfriend the night before she disappeared and spoke to her dad the morning of her disappearance. You would think that there would have been some indicators that they would have picked up on. I just find this case very tragic. I hope she is found soon and I hope the body they located is unrelated to this case. Either way, there will be family and friends whose lives will never be the same. My thought and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased person they found. :(

Sometimes there are no warning signs at all when a person is suicidal. Sometimes the person seems happier right before they kill themselves. :(

My prayers are with her family.

Has it been confirmed that the manner of death is suicide? This is very very sad. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends in this difficult time.

No. I haven't even seen MSM confirmation the body is her yet. I was speaking generally in my previous post.

Below is the full statement from family.

FAMILY STATEMENT:
"After sitting down with Denise’s father, we’ve agreed that given the attention Denise’s case has gotten over the past week, the time has come to announce this publicly.

It is with a heavy heart, that after hearing from officials, it has been confirmed that the body found was in fact Denise’s.

Thank you to all that shared Denise’s story and helped in the search for her whether it was as a volunteer on foot, sharing a post, or saying a prayer.

We ask that in this time and in the weeks to come, family and friends- keeping in mind those of us that took to social media as a means to helping in the search- are given the time to begin the healing process and mourn the loss of a beautiful daughter, sister, girlfriend and friend.

From me to Denise Martin- Rest In Peace, babe. I love you with all my heart. You are and will always be, my person.

This is not the end of Denise’s story."

I am so sorry for the loss, and hope that her friends and family do continue to tell her story.

In several recent cases of suicide, the personal effects (especially a phone) left behind seem to be the modern equivalent of a suicide note. :( IMO

I've spent the past day looking at pictures and reading the beautiful posts her friends have written, and shedding lots of tears.

Denise was a central figure in the theatre department, hilariously funny in her commentary and observations, devoted to her art, a good friend to my daughter always.

I think my favorite thing I read was written by a high school friend who had joined in the searches--"never underestimate how many people care about you."

BBM - this is my favorite statement.

Hugs of support to you and your daughter. My deepest condolences on your loss.

If a parent commits suicide, are their children more likely to do so? I'm curious about the psychological impact on surviving children.

Rest easy, Denise! So heartbreaking to her loved ones. I know her story will help to raise awareness and hopefully save lives.

Having any family member who suicides, raises the risk exponentially. It's like you can never get it out of your head. I lost my best friend to suicide and her daughter was severely injured years prior hit by a Mack truck. She gave me her things, dishes, hugs and that was it. I should have noticed what she was doing, but I failed to, and I still miss her.

I found the following just by Googling. If we have the year correct--2016--Denise would have been a young adult, and according to studies a person's age at the time is important:

Snipped: Those who lost a parent to suicide as children or teens were three times more likely to commit suicide than children and teenagers with living parents. However there was no difference in suicide risk when the researchers compared those 18 years and older. Young adults who lost a parent to suicide did not have a higher risk when compared to those with living parents.
Children who lose a parent to suicide more likely to die the same way, study finds
