Identified! VA - Fairfax Co., Human remains in woods, Feb'15 - Joseph Swain

Remains were found around 5 p.m. Sunday in the 2900 block of Treadwell Lane. They were found in a wooded, isolated area near the Difficult Run Stream Valley Park area. They were sent to a medical examiner to confirm that the remains are human.

I'd like to know how this guy found these bones. Herndon is a pretty populated area and I'm sure the Difficult Run trail has been frequented by people for as long as those bones have been there. How are they just now being found? Or was dude digging around in underbrush, 50 feet off the path? So many questions..

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the guy who discovered the remains. It's just beyond me how a dead body could sit alongside a popular trail, rotting away, and no one notices it.

Police said patrol officers from the Fair Oaks district responded to a report of human remains discovered by a resident in the 2900 block of Treadwell Lane off Lawyers Road in Oak Hill. The bones were adjacent to a nature walk path that is part of Difficult Run Stream Valley Park.

The remains have been identified as Joseph John Swain, 50, of no fixed address. Police say there is no clear sign of death. The death is defined as undetermined due to the nature of the bones, police said.
