GUILTY VA - Genevieve 'Gini' Orange, 29, raped & murdered, Falls Church, 25 Sept 2008

  • #141
Any clue yet on the "John guy" that Gini's mother referred to in her thank you note to me? One of her sisters did tell me that Gini had complained to the mgr of the apartment complex about some creepy guy following her. Her mother assumes it was Mark, but perhaps it was John. Seems like the foxes were guarding the hen house. Mrs. Orange is doing OK, although i think reality is beginning to sink in. It has to be almost impossible to cope with the loss of an only child (the 3 sisters were children from Mr. Orange's first marriage) to such a creep. I may put in a call to Detective Brian to ask about John. If any news, I'll post it. Otherwise, thanks for all your sleuthing and digging!

I know that this is an old thread but am posting with the hopes that Mrs. Orange or a friend has been following it. I would like to say that I am extremely sorry for what happened to Genevieve and am satisfied with the outcome of the trial. I have never personally met Mr. Lawlor but do believe he is a very sick individual based on what I know of his child who it appears may be headed in the same direction. I believe that no one cared enough about Mr. Lawlor when he was younger to get him the help he needed and can only hope that his child continues to receive the love and support needed to not end up like him. I would also like to thank the posters to this forum. I have not had the opportunity to read every post but the ones I have read have been well written in that they are not completely bashing Mr. Lawlor (even though he deserves it). I have read comments and other forums where he is completely trashed and even though he is not in his child's life his child may go back and read these comments/forums some day when curiosity takes over. This forum has been very to the point and from what I've read sticks to the facts of the case. Please don't misinterpret what I said to mean that I think Mr. Lawlor should be presented as a good individual because he's not. I was very happy with the recommended sentence for Mr. Lawlor but unfortunately nothing will ever bring Genevieve back or ease the pain that her family and friends have been and are still going through.

On Tuesday, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the death sentence. The court found the state court wrongly excluded the testimony of an expert witness who said Lawlor had a very low risk of committing additional violence in prison.

A spokesman for state Attorney General Mark Herring said Herring will review the 4th Circuit’s ruling and decide how to proceed.

Herring’s legal options include asking for a hearing before the full court or asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

in 2018 the judge in the case had wrongly prevented Lawlor’s lawyers from presenting evidence about Lawlor’s future dangerousness, a factor jurors must consider in death penalty cases. A new sentencing was ordered. And in the meantime, Fairfax County elected a new prosecutor who opposes the death penalty. So on Thursday, with the approval of new Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve T. Descano, Lawlor was resentenced to life without parole, agreeing to waive any rights to appeal or seek early release.
