I really think its Jürgen through the ears of an English speaker.

Yep. I tried a few combinations on ancestry, but didn't find anything useful.

Germans in Germany are not big on Ancestry. No wonder there is nothing useful

I wonder if the man who offered him accommodation in his shed and claims he was his friend for two years if he could give a little bit more information about him. I mean people talk to their friends and especialy to people who offer somehow their help.
What were they talk about in their conversations? Didnt he ever asked or wanted to know more about him?

I understand that this is a long shot... But a french man would pronounce Jürgen and would be heard as Yulgɛ̃n.
Eric Bellaird has been in Switzerland and Deutschland but it is not clear for how long.
He was a teacher and it is very possible that he knew german. He has already used a fake ID in the Swiss embassy. His mother says he wanted to go on a boat. He was possibly last heard in England. Aberdeen, Essex.. His age, his height, and eye color fit.
What if he indeed got a job in a freighter e.g, travelled from England to US and disappeared. It is known to have lived homeless before..

Why would this man have been reported missing in Germany or any other German speaking country in Europe?

What is the rationale behind this assumption?

Personally, that's way too much of a stretch for me.

Because it is said that he had a german accent

Because it is said that he had a german accent

I couldn't find a source for that. He said he was from Germany to his friend. IMO the friend never stated he spoke with a German accent.

This is in the Namus file. The friend knew the victim for about two years, knew him as Yulgen Bestmann from Germany.

It feels like a made up name, but in this book I found the name Yulgen. It would explain the Turkisch sound and use of the name.

And there is also this.

GodFinder >Yulgen >

According to the belief of the Altaians, the good spirits, aru neme, are all subjects of the good god Yulgen, and the bad spirits, kara neme, of the evil god Erlik. Yulgen is so kind and generous that he never does harm to men. Sacrifices are offered to him by all, but no one fears him. Every bridegroom must sacrifice to him a horse of a light colour after his marriage.

Altai people - Wikipedia (I know not a real source, but it will do for now)
The Altai people (or Altay), also the Altaians, are a Turkic people living in the Siberian Altai Republic and Altai Krai, Russia. A small number of Altaians also live in Mongolia and Northern Xinjiang, China but are not officially recognized as a distinct group.

Nice but a bit far fetched. The imcompability of non Germans with German names is more likely :)

I agree....I associated the name with Jürgen too. But I think it was a made up name.

Why would somebody let "a friend" sleep in his/her shed anyway and not offer a bed. Can think of many reasons....They are all very sad. I hope it was compassion for the lost and homeless.

Maybe Josef Unterhuber? He's a multilingual translator from the Italian/Austrian region. He came to the US after a breakup with his girlfriend; his passport was found in a Boston homeless shelter in 1989. He was 33 at the time, which would make him 51-52 in December 2017.

Facial resemblance isn't real close but Josef seems to have been a robust young man and it's hard to tell what he'd look like skinny after 20+ years living homeless.

I too think the name was made up. While I realize that Bestmann is a real German last name, it sounds like he was basically calling himself Mr. Goodguy.
