Manhunt underway for Appalachia murder suspect.
The Wise County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's information is tracking down a suspect in the murder of an Appalachia water plant worker on Sunday.

A report issued Monday says Eric Monroe Jones is a person of interest in the murder of Gina Lorraine Jefferson who was found dead inside the town's water facility. No details have been released on how she was killed.

Arrest warrants issued for ex-husband of slain Appalachia employee.


WISE — After two days of describing a murder suspect as a person of interest, Wise County authorities on Wednesday issued arrest warrants — including a charge of first-degree murder — against the ex-husband of a Town of Appalachia employee found shot to death early Monday in Appalachia.

Wise County Sheriff Ronnie Oakes announced that three arrest warrants were issued Wednesday against 46-year-old Eric Monroe Jones. The charges include first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm during the commission of first-degree murder.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office announced new developments in a Appalachia, Va. homicide investigation.

On November 27, Janina Jefferson, an employee at the town's water facility, was shot and killed while she was working.

Eric Monroe Jones, 46, of Big Stone Gap, Va. was a person of interest in that homicide. Now, arrest warrants have been issued against him, and he is wanted on murder charges.

Sheriff Ronnie Oakes said that Jacob Seth Rowland, 24, of Big Stone Gap, is facing five charges including acting as an accessory in the murder of Janina Jefferson on November 27.

The report said that Rowland drove first degree murder suspect and Jefferson's ex-husband Eric Jones to the scene of the murder- the Town of Appalachia Water Treatment Plant...

Jones, 46, was officially charged with the murder of Jefferson on Dec. 1 and police suspect that he continues to receive help to avoid capture. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Major Grant Kilgore of the Wise County Sheriff's Office said that during a recent meeting with the U.S. Marshals Service, it was determined that the Jones case met the status of "major case." The federal agency works thousands of high-profile violent crimes across the country. One of the criteria to become a "major case" is the amount of time the fugitive has been on the run.

Now that the case has been elevated, it receives additional resources from the Marshals Service, Kilgore said.

Big Stone Gap man accused of killing ex-wife charged with capital murder

A charge of first-degree murder has been upgraded to capital murder against a Big Stone Gap, Virginia, man accused in the death of his ex-wife, which means he could be eligible for the death penalty.

Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp, however, declined to say whether he will seek the death penalty in the case of Eric Monroe Jones, 46, who remains at large. Jones was indicted on a capital murder charge by a grand jury on Monday.

Earlier this year, 24-year-old Jacob Seth Rowland of Big Stone Gap was charged with acting as an accessory to Jefferson’s slaying. He faces charges of trespassing, violating a protective order as a principal in the second degree, conspiracy with Jones to intimidate Jefferson or impede her testimony against Jones by threats of bodily harm or force, and conspiring with Jones to violate a protective order.

All charges pending against Rowland carry a total maximum prison term of 71 years. Authorities allege Rowland drove Jones to the scene of the murder knowing there was a protective order in place banning Jones from having any contact with Jefferson.

Wise County authorities hope cable show leads to arrest in 2016 murder

Eric Monroe Jones, 48, has been a fugitive since the Nov. 28, 2016 shooting death of his ex-wife, Janina Jefferson. On Monday, the U.S. Marshals Service announced it was doubling to $10,000 its reward for information leading to Jones’ arrest.

Jones’ case has already been the subject of various true crime television shows, and it gets a fresh look Wednesday night on the Investigation Discovery cable channel’s “In Pursuit with John Walsh.”

i live about an hour from appalachia and was just over there recently. it is such a small older little town with so much history. i remember when this first occurred and watching news reports to see any updates. hopefully the culprit is soon captured and brought to justice.
