Family rejoices after abducted baby Jiraiya Cherry found safe

Summary of new information beginning at about the 2:15 mark:

Per the reporter, Jiraiya's grandmother says her son and Jiraiya's mom connected with the babysitter online and recently met with her in person to check her out. Today was actually her first day on the job. She also says that another family member was inside the apartment to make sure things went smoothly but when he went to another room to check on Jiraiya's older sister, the babysitter took Jiraiya and ran out of the apartment. Police have not confirmed yet; they are still investigating and they have not released any new details about the person in custody.

Hill says her son and Jiraiya's mother connected with the babysitter online and recently met in-person to check her out.

Hill claims the woman started the job on Thursday. Hill said her other son remained in the apartment to make sure things went smoothly, but he went to another room to check on Jiraiya's older sister. That's when the babysitter took the boy and left the apartment, according to his grandmother.

Newport News Police have not released any details about the circumstances surrounding the baby's disappearance nor information about the person in custody.

As far as the Amber Alert taking about seven hours to be released, Drew said there is five-item list of criteria police must meet before an Amber Alert is issued. If all five items aren’t verified, an alert will not be sent out.

According to the Virginia State Police website, that criteria is:
  1. The abducted child must be 17 years of age or younger or is currently enrolled in a secondary school in the Commonwealth, regardless of age, and the law enforcement agency believes the child has been abducted (unwillingly taken from their environment without permission from the child’s parent or legal guardian).
  2. The law enforcement agency believes the missing child is in imminent danger of serious bodily harm or death.
  3. A law enforcement investigation has taken place that verified the abduction or eliminated alternative explanations.
  4. Sufficient information is available to disseminate to the public that could assist in locating the child, suspect, and/or the suspect’s vehicle.
  5. The Child must be entered into the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) missing person files as soon as practical.
Drew said two criteria couldn’t be verified at first: the law enforcement agency believes the missing child is in imminent danger of serious bodily harm or death, and the law enforcement investigation has taken place that verified the abduction or eliminated alternative explanations.

He said Newport News police had reached out to Virginia State Police Thursday morning with information for an Amber Alert, but state police needed more verified information before issuing the alert.

“There’s been a lot of questions and I certainly understand it,” Drew said about the delay in issuing the alert.

Wow. That pin is pretty damning.

What's the petty larceny about?

Interestingly, the photo/pin from 8 months ago isn't hers, it was a different user and she simply re-pinned it, but still interesting to say the least.

  • Tykirah Reid was denied bail...
  • ...charged with abduction, child neglect, obstruction of justice, petit larceny, and changing a vehicle’s ID number - all in Chesterfield County.
  • ...will also face an abduction charge in Newport News, and additional charges are pending.
Reid’s mother and sister said the charges are a “misunderstanding,” but wouldn’t answer how the charges are a misunderstanding. Reid’s sister told 13News Now that Reid loves children and would never hurt anyone, saying she has many questions about what happened She turned down an on-camera interview Friday. o_O

Baby’s family speaks out after abduction in Newport News; woman accused faces judge | WAVY.com
[...]

Grandmother Tonisha Martin explained that the child’s uncle was at the apartment meeting for the first time with a woman they found to watch Jiraiya in an online babysitter group.

[...]

“[Uncle] Joe Joe was here because it was a trial run, so he was in the back letting her do her babysitting duties when she blocked Jerkia [Jiraiya’s mother]. She got worried, called Joe Joe and told him to come out of the room and go in the front and to see what was going on, and that’s when he came in the front and she [babysitter] was no longer there.”

She said the child’s mother was reportedly keeping in contact with the new babysitter through a messenger video chat, when the young woman suddenly blocked her.
