"Fairfax County Police are seeking new information in the 1972 death of a 12-year-old girl in Huntington. Cold case detectives are seeking the public's help to give closure to the girl's family.

Karen Lee Spencer was found dead on Dec. 2, 1972 in Fifer's Field, a wooded area between Mount Eagle Park and North Kings Highway and southeast what's now Huntington Metro Station. An autopsy found she died from repeated blunt force trauma to the upper body.

She went missing on the night of Nov. 29, but her disappearance was not immediately reported."

Wonder why they want information about her friend who died in the 90s, James “Jimmy” Edwards

That's a clue by innuendo if I've ever seen one. Wish they linked an article to more specifically research him.

Perhaps there is a family tree somewhere for both of them....with DNA results attached to it. They don't mention any evidence like clothing but I would think they'd have something.

Here are some highlights from the article:

“On December 2, 1972, the annual carnival held in the field had just left town, and a group of boys was looking around at what was left behind. What they found was Karen’s body. Police say Karen had been beaten and died from blunt force trauma to her upper body. But FOX 5 has learned what happened to Karen was far worse. Police requested specific details of the crime not be revealed because those are details only certain people would know, like the killer and those the killer may have confided in.”

“Thomas Spencer, Karen’s older brother, still lives in the family home where Karen was last seen three days before her body was found. Police say Karen’s family never reported her missing. Still, Spencer says his mother was beside herself when his sister disappeared. ‘I heard that she stayed up every night, all night,’ Spencer said. ‘And when it was found out on Saturday that they found her, a priest came and gave her sedatives and blessings.’”

“In the weeks that followed, police gave polygraph tests to some young people in the neighborhood and identified several persons of interest. One of them was Karen’s 16-year-old boyfriend, James “Jimmy” Edwards. Police say information they received at the time indicated the pair may have broken up prior to Karen’s death. Police say Edwards maintained he had nothing to do with the murder. He died in 1997. Decades later, police haven’t given up, and are now in the process of doing new testing on clothing and other items from the crime scene.”

“Police want to talk to anyone who knew James Edwards at the time of the murder or in his adult years. They would also like to speak to those who lived in the Fairhaven area in 1972, especially if they hung out with Karen and her friends. She was known to frequent the Fairhaven 7-11 that still remains on Fairhaven Ave. now. Police also want to know where Karen was in her final days after she left home on Nov. 29.”

Though 16-year-old boys are definitely capable of inflicting this type of blunt force and beating trauma to someone, to me, hearing the extreme level of brutality inflicted on Karen’s body I’d probably look more seriously at adult males as my first suspects rather than a 16-year-old boy. The police may have very well done that and come to the conclusion that Jimmy was their best suspect, though. Beyond the physical aspect, I would also think it would be harder for a 16-year-old boy to commit a murder like this and get away with it for 50 years. To not leave any evidence behind (not talking DNA, just normal forensic or physical evidence) or say anything incriminating to others may be a bit above a 16-year-old boy’s sophistication level. Jimmy very well could have done this but I’m a little scheptical. MOO

I do find it interesting that the carnival had just left town right when Karen was likely murdered, and that she was left in the field that they were in.

Well if Jimmy did it, he only got away with it for 25 years. Wonder how he died. But having that happen to a teen girlfriend can mess you up whether you were responsible or not. I can definitely see why they'd want to look into him, as well as people he knew.

As for carnies, I hope they checked the Lloyd Welch timeline.

I’ve attached two articles I found, both from Dec 4th, 1972, just two days after her death and or her body was found.

“Beyond saying the girl had been murdered, police declined to discuss details of her death. They also declined comment on speculation her death was connected with the slayings of several other young girls in the county during the past five years.”

I find that last part of the article very interesting. Does anyone know anything more about the multiple slayings of young girls in Fairfax Co, VA (or surrounding counties) around 1967-72+ that they might have been referring to in the article? I really couldn’t find much online when I did a mediocre sleuthing attempt.
Were most of the cases solved, thus dismissing the theory that were connected, or are there still some unsolved cold cases that might fit the MO or victim profile of this case?

HUNTINGTON, VA—Fairfax County Police are seeking new information in the 1972 death of a 12-year-old girl in Huntington.

29, but her disappearance was not immediately reported.

Spencer lived in the 2500 block of Belleview Avenue in Huntington and was a student at Hayfield Secondary School. She would often play with neighborhood children in locations including Fifer's Field and the Fairhaven 7-Eleven. One of her friends was James "Jimmy" Edwards, who was 16 when she died. Edwards died in the 1990s.

a 12 year old doesn't have a 16 year old ' boyfriend' That 16 year old is an abuser/predator.

of course that doesn't necessarily make him a murderer.

If the evidence was preserved well they may be able to get a DNA match to the perp. This was a crime of anger. Did she plan to tattle on those selling or doing drugs? Someone must have witnessed her walking away to the field but is too afraid to speak up. Or perhaps they took that info to their grave.

Police just released info that they have enough evidence now that if James Edwards was alive today...he would be arrested. Their investigation was based on 2 separate witnesses claiming that Mr Edwards confessed to killing a girl and leaving her in a field when he was a teenager. They did not specify what other evidence they had, but since this was literally just released hours ago I am sure more details will emerge.

If Jimmy Edwards was capable of doing such heinous injury to a 12 year old girl when he was 16, what other crimes did he commit later in life? How many other unsolved murders might he have committed?

  • #16
I was thinking the exact same thing!!!

  • #17
As were most of us reading this thread is my guess. Was Edwards still local to the area when he died ?

I was trying to find him on Find a Grave but without more details, I can’t narrow it down. There’s a few James Edwards born in the mid 1950s and died in the 1990s.

Here's another article and it includes the death date of the perp James Edward as 8/23/1997. I wish they would elaborate on what the other evidence was, like a CODIS hit, familial DNA hit, etc.

Detectives Say They Solved 1972 Cold Case Murder of 12-Year-Old Karen Lee Spencer

Snips:
It took almost five decades, but police in Fairfax County, Virginia say they solved the 1972 murder of Karen Lee Spencer, 12. James “Jimmy” Edwards, then 16, was responsible, cops say. He was a person of interest, who some thought was her boyfriend, according to the official account. This development is, at best, an opportunity for closure. There will be no justice under the law because Edwards died on August 23, 1997, police said.

Spencer was last seen alive November 29, 1972, and was found the following December 2nd in what was then called Fifer’s Field, officers said. This was a wooded area near the current location of the Huntington Metro Station. The 12-year-old died from repeated blunt force trauma to her upper body, officers said.

Officers learned that Spencer often hung out with other local kids, including Edwards. Neighborhood children, including the 12-year-old, often went to Fifer’s Field, and a nearby 7-Eleven.

Edwards was on police radar for a long while. They made sure to mention his name when they released a video in June 2019 to seek the public’s help.

Edwards had “two independent acquaintances” who told police the previous summer (2018) that Edwards said in the early 1990s that he’d killed a girl and buried her in a field when he was a teenager. Investigators said they got more tips leading to additional evidence, on top of other proof tying Edwards to the crime.
