I would assume so. I always thought they’d file murder charges prior to trial, as they had more than enough evidence to pursue a no-body case.

There was no reason to have a trial on the concealment charge, only to turn around and have another trial for murder.

I expect this to push things much further out.

The husband of a missing Manassas Park, Virginia, woman has been indicted on a charge of murder and physically defiling a dead body.

“I know the crime scene was a big one. The forensic unit at Prince William County said it was one of the worst crime scenes they’ve seen,” he [Police Chief Lugo] said.

Naresh Bhatt is expected to be in Prince William Circuit Court at 10 a.m. Tuesday to be formally charged.

Evidence suggests Mamta's body was cut up. Police believe all of this happened in their home on July 29 into the following morning.

Manassas Park Chief of Police Mario Lugo told reporters at a news conference Monday evening that DNA tests proved blood that was in Kafle Bhatt’s bedroom belonged to her and evidence showed she was killed July 29.

Investigators found blood in their home, cadaver dogs gave signs of a body and video shows him dropping trash in various dumpsters, prosecutors say.

DNA evidence shows the blood was Mamta Kafle Bhatt's, Lugo said. Police believe she was killed in the home and dismembered in the home.

Today’s scheduled first court appearance for Naresh Bhatt, after yesterday’s indictment for the murder of his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt is postponed until tomorrow — a Nepalese interpreter wasn’t available this morning. Stay w @WTOP for the latest.

On July 30, prosecutors say Naresh Bhatt traveled to a Walmart in Chantilly to purchase three knives, two of which are unaccounted for. The following day he was captured on surveillance video at a different Walmart purchasing cleaning supplies, according to prosecutors.

in April, Naresh Bhatt allegedly used his work laptop to search, "How long does it take to get married after spouse die" and "What happen to debt died spouse."

Police also said that his conflicting statements, to police, the media and the public raised red flags, CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported.

"We stood back and listened and that was one of the things. We try to see what he was saying to the public and that's not what he was telling us was going on," said Chief Lugo.

Per the Post, prosecutors also alleged that Naresh got rid of a bloodstained bath mat in a donation bin outside of a Loudoun County gas station and was seen wearing gloves as he discarded bags into a trash compactor in the early morning hours after Mamta Kafle’s disappearance.

So now he's charged with murder. He won't like that one little bit, it will ruin all his plans. :)

The elevated charges mean the court’s clock restarts. Naresh Bhatt had been set to go to trial on those initial concealment of a body charges next week, but with the addition of an elevated charge of first-degree murder, it could be a much longer road before he stands trial.

“There's always a challenge whenever the body is missing in a murder case, but it seems to me that the prosecution in this case has abundant evidence to win their case,” said John Fishwick. “There's a lot of forensic evidence that puts Mr. Bhatt in the house, sadly when she [Mamta] apparently was killed. There's also the forensic evidence of her blood in the house, and there's a timeline that shows the two of them together and apart. And I'm sure they were meticulously tracking that timeline, plus his statements, which are incriminating and certainly I don't think will be appreciated by the jury. I think they can win the case.”

New: Naresh Bhatt made his first appearance in court this morning, after being indicted on murder and defiling a body, in the July disappearance of wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt. Previous charge of concealing dead body will be included when trial for the 3 felonies starts Sept 8, 2025.

#NOW trial has been set in the Naresh Bhatt case - looking to September 8th - October 2nd of next year. Some of Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s supporters say they’re disappointed, also not in support of a March hearing on whether Court TV can televise the trial but that it’s up to her fam.

The Associated Press reported the trial could take about four weeks. Court TV is seeking to televise Bhatt's trial, but that decision is up to the judge.

Mamta’s supporters expressed their disappointment after Wednesday's hearing but acknowledged the lengthy process before the trial begins. Some oppose the March hearing that will determine whether the trial could be televised, but say it’s ultimately the decision of Mamta’s mother and brother.

A motion was also filed in court to decide whether the trial should be televised on Court TV; a hearing was set for that decision in March.

“They’re going to be relieving every moment of their daughter’s tragic end and what their daughter and what their granddaughter had to face in this adversity at that time, but that will be something that the family will have to discuss,” said Rodas.

Some of the DNA evidence collected includes the following:
  • Cheek sample from the couple's daughter.
  • Hairbrush belonging to Mamta.
  • Piece of carpet
  • Cheek sample from Naresh
The report, prepared by Virginia’s Department of Forensic Science Northern Laboratory, indicates blood found on parts of a reciprocating saw, a handheld power tool commonly used to cut drywall, wood, hard plastic and metal, matched a DNA profile created from Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s hairbrush.
