Navy couple denied bond in death of infant

NORFOLK - A man and woman have been denied bond on charges that they neglected their 10-month-old twins until one died and the other was left in critical condition.

Heaven Kristina Smith, 21, is charged with one count of murder and two counts of neglect. Corey Alan Bryant, 21, is charged with two counts of neglect.

They were arrested on April 8 after their child, Miracle Grace Bryant, died at DePaul hospital. She and her twin sister, Heaven L. Bryant, were taken to the hospital suffering from what appeared to be severe malnutrition, police spokesman James Robertson said. He said Heaven Bryant remains in critical condition.

They said each plan to hire a defense attorney, so a counsel determination hearing was scheduled for April 30. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 21.
