A risk, certainly, but not a big risk -- it does not sound like the field where she was found is visible from the farmhouse. The landowner mentioned problems with hunters trespassing, so even if he noticed something he might not have thought much of it.

Why did he bring her there and not bury her? The whole reasoning is strange. If he buried her she probably would never have been found. So I think they will find who killed her quickly. So imo this killer screwed up big time. Im hoping theres something, some dna or fibers on her still which will get him caught. Now if he used a atv/car I wonder if theres still tracks there? Maybe the hay is still weighed down for them to know, I hope so.

But thats the point.it was cut in august she was gone in october then u have winter u dont hay in the winter so u have like august untill like may for the body to decompose and animals and then the farmer starts haying in may and i have drove a tractor u would not know if u went over a skelliton with the combine it would be like tiny sticks and twigs someone new all that..

Never thought of that, omg. Im so glad they found her, thank god they found her. Now another storm coming in.

I thought I heard Lt. Rader say in the press conference they had occasional trespassers.

Shutterfly found the tax map and posted it (#505 in this thread). It's 521 acres in the main parcel, not sure whether there are other parcels. The 100 acres that's registered as a historic place might be separate.

I hope you're right. The police in the press conference made it sound like they had found quite a lot of evidence.

I'm under the impression that it's quite common for murderers to just dump their victims in isolated places, figuring that after a few months, nobody will be able to trace them. But this one strikes me as a murderer who is neither bright nor experienced. He/they probably never even thought of things like this.

your right alot of bodies are just dumped ...however what makes this one different is acess to the farm apparentlly it was not easy acess to find the farm let alone get on to it and dump it where it was..

The answer to this one, I am pretty sure, is just that digging through plant roots in a hay field is nearly impossible without some major farm equipment! Since the grasses are mowed and not dug up and replanted yearly, the root systems are VERY entrenched, and the LEO said that in October the hay had returned to nearly waist high......so someone lying in that area would have been invisible....no need to dig.

Also, heavy grass or hay would leave a path of smashed down grasses, but no tire tracks unless there were bare dirt areas....now, if they ever had a POI whose car, truck etc. has been looked at before now and there was mud and long grasses underneath.....then that would be QUITE helpful as a clue.

On JV-M right now. I am glad they found her body - from what I understand, it could have never been found. My prayers are for this loving family, may she rest in peace now.
My feeling is that this was done by a local who knew around the area well. IMO Morgan was in the wrong place at the wrong time, stranger abduction.:(

Raeann..Im sorry I didn't mean buried there, I meant somewhere else. :banghead: But your right.

So LE never made mentioned of her necklace? Only her bracelet. So the prep kept it as a souvenir...They should show that necklace on the news..NOW.

The location is Anchorage Farms, more than 700 acres of pasture and woods about eight miles away from Interstate 64. Nancy and David Bass have owned this farm for more than 30 years. I spoke with Nancy earlier today and she says the pasture is empty in the winter, but where the body was found is a place they do farming. There is a subdivision that is close by to their land, and sometimes people trespass, hunt, and go biking on their property.

No, not a word about the necklace today, yet it was one of the main things emphasized earlier as a clue.

I want to extend my prayers to the Harrington family...their grief could be insurmountable but they seem to find comfort in their religion. I wish them peace.

Also, just a thought -- there is indeed a killer loose in the Charlottesville area! And the perpetrator in Morgan's case may not have placed her on that farm property in October. She (or her body) could have been held elsewhere until recently.

  • #636
Another interesting thing to note: Anchorage Farms is directly across the street from Red Hill Quarry, which judging from the satellite view on Google maps as well as the street view, is a pretty active mine. Even though the street view doesn't go inside the quarry, the image below is of the entrance to Red Hill Quarry, run by Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. I imagine a place like this:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&s...zikxduNt-qLU75lDxk03Og&cbp=12,49.71,,0,-10.22

Has many, many employees with intimate knowledge of the area.

Yes but ..she went missing in october and they said they found a skelletonized body my thinking is its starting to get cold in october and after is winter ,In the cold the body will very very slowly decompose so my guess is she was there from the night she went missing .

I surmised Morgan was dead by now, but this news breaks my heart all over again. She was such a beautiful girl with a wonderful life ahead of her. I'm so sad and numb. I cannot imagine how her parents feel.

Jane is RIGHT, there is something very sick about our society. Maybe we could start by outlawing 🤬🤬🤬🤬.

UPDATED: State police are confident remains are Morgan Harrington
January 26, 2010

UPDATED: 5:00 Tuesday
The skeletal remains were found in a hayfield on the Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County this morning. State police say they are "confident" the remains are hers, but have sent the body to the medical examiner in Richmond for further tests and autopsy. A farmer found the body Tuesday morning while he was driving a tractor in his field.

The body was sent to the medical examiner for further testing, but investigators say significant items found at the scene lead them to be fairly certain the body is the 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing during a Metallica concert last October in Charlottesville. Investigators say they can't release details about the items found, but believe the scientific evidence will confirm with certainty that the body is Harrington's.

State police said the body was found in a very remote area of the farm without easy access to the location. They say the area can only be reached by tractor or 4-wheel drive vehicle and there is no public access to the field. Reporters were not permitted to visit the crime scene.

State police are treating Harrington's disappearance as a homicide. Lt. Joe Rader says the case now moved to a new level.

Police Believe Body Found May Be Morgan Harrington

Police said at a news conference Tuesday that they are "fairly confident" the remains of a woman found in southern Albemarle County are indeed those of Morgan Harrington. The announcement appears to end the search that began 101 days ago when Harrington disappeared following a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena.

Around 9 a.m. Tuesday, the body of a female with long blond hair and wearing dark clothing was reported found in a remote location on Anchorage Farm off of Route 29. Police did not comment on any physical evidence at the scene but did say the body was found in a hay field and commented that the hay would have been waist high at the time of Harrington's disappearance.

Police did not confirm the body was that of Harrington, but did say the evidence strongly suggested it was. A spokesman from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond said the remains would definitely be brought to Richmond for autopsy after investigators process the scene.

*State Police Press Release:
STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING SKELETAL REMAINS DISCOVERED

IN ALBEMARLE COUNTY

Investigators Confident Remains are of Missing VT Student
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – State and local law enforcement are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains in Albemarle County in connection with the ongoing search and investigation for missing Virginia Tech student, Morgan Dana Harrington, 20, of Roanoke, Va.

At 9:53 Tuesday morning (January 26, 2010) an Albemarle County resident notified Virginia State Police of a discovery he made in one of the fields on his 700-acre farm in the southern part of the county. While operating a tractor, he came across skeletal remains in a remote section of a hayfield. There is no public access to this particular area. The hayfield was last cut in August 2009 and would have been possibly waist-high by mid October 2009.

State police immediately dispatched investigators and crime scene technicians to the scene to evaluate and process the findings. With the assistance of Albemarle County Police, Charlottesville Police, and University of Virginia Police, investigators have been on the scene all day Tuesday gathering and analyzing evidence. The scene will remain secured by Virginia State Police overnight for investigators to return Wednesday for additional investigation.

Based on evidence recovered at the scene, investigators are fairly confident at this time that the remains are those of Morgan Dana Harrington - the 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing from the University of Virginia campus during a Metallica concert on the night of October 17, 2009. The remains are being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification and autopsy.

"Not until we receive word from the medical examiner can we say we are 100-percent certain that this is Miss Harrington," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent, at a Tuesday evening press conference in Charlottesville. "However, based on evidence recovered with the remains, we are confident that scientific testing will confirm her identification."

Investigators are now working to determine how the remains came to be in this particular location, cause and time of death, and identifying who was responsible for the remains being there.

State Police still ask for the public to come forward and provide any information they may have related to the case of Morgan Harrington, especially now with this new lead. With over 600 tips received to-date, state and local police thank the public for coming forward and providing details that helped establish the timeline that night of Miss Harrington's movements after she was outside John Paul Jones Arena. Those with information and tips are encouraged to call Virginia State Police at 434-352-3467 or UVA Police at 434-924-7166 or by email at [email protected].

"I want to acknowledge and thank the law-enforcement agencies for their steadfast support and contributions to the search and investigation into the Morgan Harrington case," said Colonel Flaherty. "We also want to thank Dr. and Mrs. Harrington for persevering through three months of the unimaginable."

State Police say they are fairly certain that the body found in Albemarle County is that of missing Roanoke County Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

Investigators said during a news conference they cannot release evidence that lead them to that conclusion.

The farm where State Police believe Harrington’s remains were found is about ten miles away from JPJA.

State Police Confident Morgan Harrington Body Found
Updated: 5:39 PM Jan 26, 2010
<snipped>
Virginia State Police Colonel W. Steven Flaherty says the skeletal remains of a woman found on a farm Tuesday morning do appear to belong to 20-year-old Morgan Harrington.

"Based on evidence that was found there, we are fairly confident this is the remains of Morgan Harrington," said Flaherty, "there are significant items that makes us confident that the scientific procedure will confirm the I.D."

The skeletal remains will be taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond for positive identification.

Morgan's parents, Dan and Gil Harrington, travelled from Roanoke to Charlottesville after the discovery of the remains. They were not present during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
