I am sorry for sketchy details.NO chocolate is not listed within the Word of Wisdom explicitly. However CAFFINE is listed, read the ingredients on your next Chocolate bar....LOL Most do contain caffineThe young man you mention seems to have been in a rush to get away from something.Think about it....99% of people who convert to our faith(me included)was intro'd to it by missionarys. These young people are tasked to explain every basic detail of the faith to you.Now how would a "new"member explain that which they barely understand themselves....This is odd and I don't believe this is the NORM.

The cancer thing well I would think this was an oversite by the local ward(church). It is the policy of the church as I understad it that if a local ward needs more funds than they have, they can petition to their temple and to Salt Lake itself in times of dire need.I don't think someone has followed the procedures thru in this case...sad but hey noone's perfect ya know.

No more public replys on the faith itself.....If you have further questions or want me to clarify this 1 further ,Please by all means PM me and I will reply to the best of my ability....Thank you

Ths is indeed an odd case which is in ways the exact opposite of "standard"procedures. It is VERY rare for a person to convert to our faith and go straight out on a mission, actually I thought the church had some sort of policy here. The vast majority of missionaries are life long members, who have thru the yrs been groomed by their family for the mission work.It is expected by the church that missionary families save money over the yrs(if possible)to aid the youngster on his future mission. You are hearing the correct phone call story. These young people are not out here to sit on the phone chatting, rather they are to be performing a very valuable task for our faith.Their time is precious, not only do they have hours of mission work to do each week, and hours of coomunity work as well, they also are responsible for their own up keep. The church pays noone to do their laundry, cook their meals, shop, clean their home, etc etc,the youngsters do these things for themselves in amongst the various other duties of their position.I find the illness story a bit biased,in that as a member for over 20 yrs I can not begin to count the number of times our local congegation has took up money and held fund drives for others in our congregation who are ill.We of the morman faith view all mankind as our brother or sister and no member who was true to the teachings of our Father and his Prophets would ever think to shun a brother or sister who needed us.

For the poster who doesn't want to be a morman because they like caffine and smoke......So do a large number of our members.Yes the faith does have what is called "The Words of Wisdom"which do tell us that such things as caffine, tobacco, alcohol are bad for our body and SHOULD be avoided by us.Notice I said should and not MUST BE.The decision to follow or neglect this teaching is the sole discretion of the individual member and the church will in no way attempt to change your decisions against your will.No we won't go to hell if we smoke a cigarette or eat a chocolate bar....and NO the church will not deny you membership or end your membership if you choose to use these products....That is a foolish MYTH started by non members to discredit a faith which they have no F"N clue about.

I am the one who mentioned the smoking and drinking of caffeine. You do not need to be so harsh. I was a member for a couple of years and I admire the Mormons for their strong faith. It was just not for me. As a matter of fact I am still on the rolls as a member (even though I have gone back to the Baptist church) as I have never asked for a formal dispensation. On Sundays the missionaries would come over after church to my friends house for Sunday dinner. So, even though I was not a lifelong member I do have some sort of clue of what goes on.

Another thing. My friend who is a lifelong member once left me at a club because I was drinking. Also, it was she who ended up single and pregnant (while ministering to me about pre-marital sex) not me. At the time I was going to church I worked at a grocery store. After I quit attending for some reason the women in the ward's Relief Society didn't speak to me when they encountered me. Maybe it was just the ward I was in.

Sorry I sounded "harsh"..Did not mean to.All I was saying was that this is a myth started by non members, yes I meet many newer members who believe these things still. The missionaries try their best but it is impossible to cover every little detail of the faith in 6 short discussions.Plus you figure they do 4-5 of these discussions per day along with the knocking,so I suppose at times they do forget stuff.I was in no way claiming YOU were trying to start these myths or to spread them...trust me these myths were here long before either of us were, and they'll be here long after we are gone. I want to say that it is most likely the ward you were in that led to the ignorance you encountered....In my ward if a member goes 1 week without attending he gets a visit from someone to see if they are ok.

LOL Believe you me I had visits and calls I just didn't answer. Those eventually stopped but I still get stuff in the mail. It doesn't really bother me so I just don't do anything about it.

From March 2010:

http://hamptonroads.com/2010/03/chesapeake-man-sentenced-mormon-shooting-case

Circuit Court Judge Randy Smith followed a jury's recommendation Monday and ordered Boughton, now 23, to spend 38-1/2 years behind bars...

The pair had been proselytizing door-to-door on Elkhart Street and were on their way to their bicycles when a hooded gunman, fleeing after attempting to shoot another person, crossed their path. Testimony during the trial said that the two assured the gunman they hadn't seen anything, but he shot them anyway.

Boughton denied he was the shooter. A jury concluded after a three-week trial 15 months ago that he was...
