I've traveled with parrots .. it depends on how you do it.. Shipping them can be traumatic, but traveling with them (in a car) is actually quite fun!

This is very upsetting to me. Parrots live up to 60 years.

And can be very annoying if you don't have the right relationship. I lived with someone once who had a parrot who absolutely loved its owner, but hated the daylights out of me. It would screech whenever I walked in the room. Guess who had to move out? I DID.

Birds are very sensitive and know when you don't like them (like I hated that dam bird).

In my opinion this is a "in your face" to the public. Look what I'm doing - I'm buying a pet - so you can all bugger off.

Poor birdie!!

Michael Vick acknowledges he's a dog owner

(CNN) -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison for bankrolling a deadly dogfighting ring, now has a dog.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," he said in a statement released Thursday. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals."

He added that "our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."...

From your link Steely:

Under the terms of his conviction, Vick had been barred from owning an animal.

Was this legally changed?

I hope this is a good thing! I have no idea how or where Vick was raised but I do know men that were raised where "dog fighting" was normal and accepted. They were just kids, and the dogs were just dogs... they weren't "trained" per se'...Every kid in the "hood" knew who had the "biggest baddest" dog...
IF Vick is being honest and trying to raise his kids differently then good for him I guess...

My dad was raised to not like "certain" people.(and still doesn't) I lived it and it always made me sad... I did not learn that behavior from him. He embarrased me (and still does) I made it a POINT to raise my children that thinking like that is not acceptable behavior!

* this is why I think Vick's kids having a dog as a pet might not be "in yo face" but "let's not repeat the past"? and improve the future?
IDK!

:seeya: Thanks for this update, Steely !

OMG ... this guy should NEVER own a dog or any other kind of pet ...

This poor, poor dog !

I have mixed emotions over this. I hate to see Vicki with a pet but I am also not sure that his kids should be deprived of a pet due to his actions. Kids learn from having pets and in my opinion it is very healthy and good for them to have one. You know when I was having a bad day as an adolescent I sometimes felt that my dog was my only friend and growing up I often felt she was my best friend.

I believe that it was only while he was on probation, which was 3 years.

I'm using your post as a jumping off point because I have heard this from many different people.

What this "man" did went WELL BEYOND dog fighting. I will not post the evil things this "man" did but they can all be found in the trial transcripts. No normal person could do the things he did. He is a very, very sick individual and I believe him to be a sociopath based on both his behavior while the animal cruelty was going on and after he was caught. I believe with every fiber in my being that MV is using the excuse of his children as an "in your face, I can do whatever the $%*& I want."

Some days I still feel like this about my dog!! Not that she's my only friend but that she's the only "person" I like and want to be around on particular days....lol.

I'm not a mother yet but I feel absolutely certain that if the father of my children did what MV did, I would do everything in my power to make sure that he was never alone with my children. I don't know if the woman that MV married this summer is the mother of any of his children but if so, I worry about what she thinks is acceptable behavior. Like I said, NO normal person could do the things that MV did and I believe him to be a sociopath. I also believe most sociopaths are not able to be rehabilitated.

With all of that said, I think that since MV is in the spotlight and likely always will be at least somewhat, he will be on his very, very best behavior. Not because he thinks what he did was wrong but because he doesn't want to get into trouble again. I truly hope this is the case. If it were some random average joe, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be a re-offender.

You guys aren't the only ones who feel that way about your dogs; http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104065&highlight=listens+husband

I know that his children should have the experience of having a pet, but but but-- I do not want this man to have the chance to ever be around an animal again. He lost that right as far as I am concerned. I hate to hear he has a pet already. I wish it would have been deemed he was not allowed to have one for life.

My pets, (as many of you feel about yours) are children to me. He abused children in my eyes. Yes, he has done the time, but it does not matter- what
he did was henious and beyond moral forgiveness.

I guess our feelings do not matter at this point since he has a pet already...

Too sad to even ponder.

Where are the legislators? Child molesters are not allowed near kids. Why is he allowed to own an animal? WHAT KIND OF WOMAN WOULD HAVE KIDS WITH THIS MONSTER?

  • #1,074
How many times a day does he kick and punch the dog when noone is looking? Or when they are looking? How many people believe MV is hugging and loving an animal? NONE. Where is the ASPCA? He got his sic sadistic thrill out of torturing and killing dogs (aka dog fighting) and I think it will continue behind closed doors.

  • #1,075
What kind of woman would marry a guy like this? Easy answer: a woman that thinks the same way he does!

This attitude is not at all uncommon, dog fighting in inner city environments is openly accepted (as in REALLY open, occurring on public streets and entire neighborhoods know about it). A lot of folks see animals as basically just objects that happen to scream and bleed and feel pain, they see it as their God given right to abuse those animals since they are "above them".

Why do his kids have to OWN a dog? Why doesn't he take them to a shelter and let them volunteer so they can learn about the correct care of a pet?

I hate to punish his children because they're innocent, but I also hate to see him have any one on one contact with an animal. They need a ASPCA volunteer to come and check the welfare of the dog periodically. Yeah, wonder how well that would work? We can't even get that done the right way for children.

Bless this dog and I hope he lives a long, healthy, happy life free of fear and abuse by MV or anyone.

On a good note during football season maybe he won't be home and have contact with the dog. Trying to find a silver lining.

Never liked Michael Vick even before he got in trouble. What an arrogant and narcissistic person he is.

  • #1,079
He shouldn't even be allowed to have ants in his house!!

  • #1,080
There should be a flash mob in front of the court houses that have animal abuse cases on the calender. Invite the media. This way the DAs and judges know people are watching at how animal cases are being handled. The laws against animal abuse are a joke .And thats before they plead out. You would not know that most DAs are men. Thats because they have no balls.
