Alleged 'love triangle' leads to arrest of Church Hill man for murder
CHURCH HILL An investigation into a man who tied up and held his wife hostage at gunpoint at his Church Hill residence on Thursday has led to his arrest for a murder that reportedly occurred in adjoining Scott Co., Virginia.
While details were still sketchy as of mid-day Friday, authorities believe the incidents may be connected through an alleged "love triangle".
John Martin, Jr., 44, of Church Hill was arrested by Hawkins Co. authorities Thursday afternoon after a brief standoff, and charged him with aggravated kidnapping.
As information developed through the local investigation, and a body was discovered in neighboring Scott County, Virginia, authorities there charged Martin with murder (first degree), kidnapping, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and concealing a dead body.
Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said in a Friday morning news release that about 3:35 p.m. on May 3, 2018, the Hawkins Co. Sheriff's Office received a request to conduct a welfare check on a woman who was possibly being held against her will at 5127 Carters Valley Road, Lot 22, Church Hill.

"A female came out of the home followed by two female juveniles," Lawson said.
The adult female identified herself as Dawn Martin, the wife of John Martin, Jr., 44, Lawson said.
"Dawn advised they are in the process of a divorce and have been having problems for the last five years," the sheriff said.
The woman said that at approximately 9 a.m. on May 3, Martin awoke her "and was pointing a gun at her".
"Dawn advised she was made to sit in a chair and he zipped tied her feet and kept the gun with him saying she could not leave," Lawson said. "Dawn stated during the morning she told John she would stay if he untied her so he did so."
Around 2 p.m., the sheriff added, the woman was able to tell another family member to call 911 and inform dispatchers that she was being held against her will.
"During the time Dawn was giving this information (to deputies), John was standing in the door of the mobile home and would not follow orders to come out," Lawson said. "After a brief standoff with John, he did comply with the deputies' commands and surrendered without incident."
Lawson said the investigation led to information regarding a possible murder in Scott County, Virginia, and that the information was forward to officials there where "a body was located".
Scott Co. Sheriff's Office Chief deputy Jim Benton said in published reports on Friday that Martin faces multiple charges in the death of Nicholas Pierce, 20, who had reportedly been staying with Martin at his Church Hill home.
According to Benton, Martin suspected that Pierce and Martin's wife to be "romantically involved".
Pierce's body was found about 7 p.m. Thursday along Cameron Church Road, in the Yuma community.

The fatal shooting is believed to have happened in Scott County, the chief deputy told news media outlets.
More details will be posted as they are made available to the Review.
