A self trained athelete who presents himself or herself during try outs with out being pre-selected to do so. They then do so well that they earn a place on the team. In atheletics, being a "walk on" carries a certain amount of prestige because it is so hard to do at the college / university level. Successfully doing it can indicate that the person is a "natural".
I was an athletic trainer for college athletics. A walk on usually means they want to part of the team but aren't good enough to be recruited or receive a scholarship. It is not prestigious. Being a full ride is prestigious. If he was that good then he would have a scholarship and would absolutely not be a walk on. Now this doesn't mean he's not good, he was at his highschool. But VT is a D1 school, they have lots of very talented athletes. He was a small fish in a big pond at VT as opposed to a big fish in small pond like he was used to being in highschool.
