I've been meaning to ask anyone who knows, is there a reason why not many details about the murder of NL are being reported? I feel like nothing new has been reported from LE or Mary Pettit in a while.

bbm: Just my thoughts: First, it seems that maybe close-to-the-vest is this jurisdiction's style, for starters. But I think there're other reasons: They have two suspects, in custody, one has talked a lot...so they KNOW a lot (though granted, it may be slanted). They've recovered Nicole, so no need to push for tips, etc., in that regard; they're waiting on forensics (autopsy, recovered items, computer/cell phone) to direct them further; they have a lot of folks to talk to (and probably tips and info coming in pretty strongly) in Nicole's friends, DE's and NK's acquaintances, etc. I think, right now, they have no need to release many details to further the investigation.

ETA: And I think I can throw in this mix, too, that, if they don't especially need to release details to get more details right now, the university will probably breathe a small sigh of relief.

Apps like Kik/snapchat are anonymous. Unless a monitoring app was installed on the phone by a parent/guardian before or during messages being sent then yes, you would be able to view conversations. Or in the instance the person in possession of the phone would take a screen shot while using the App it will be saved within the iCloud( if turned on ) and phone camera images. LE will be able to see where communication was made between two parties but not details of the conversation. So basically they can tell if DE or NK had contact with NL but not what was said.
Social media apps such as Facebook, IG, etc..LE would be able to accessText and Emails that contain data of previous messages sent and received. They can be retrieved even if deleted. Hope this helps.

I'm kinda like you as well.. Im all peace, love, and happiness then something like this happens and I start to wonder why the art of stoning faded away. This case is so disheartening and extremely infuriating.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe DE just wanted to kill someone...? IDK. I definitely lean toward the idea of contacting/interacting with Nicole being his idea (though, with the little we know, it could be ANY which way around, IMO).

Don't know, though, that I think DE is a pedophile, or sexually interested in younger girls, particularly. Maybe it was just what he perceived as neediness/weakness/"imperfection" that drew his attention to Nicole as "an appropriate victim" for him.

One kind of way-out-there scenario I've thought of is that his "perfect murder" plan could have involved finding someone else to draw into the plan...and maybe NK had a neediness, in his view, herself that made HER fit his specs, too. Maybe the plan was to draw her in, first with just relatively casual, this-is-just-a-fantasy talk, gradually moving closer and closer to reality. Like a game...a "secret and special" one. Right down to...let's buy a shovel. Let's choose a weapon. Let's decide how we would lure Nicole out.... I sometimes think maybe he thought of killing NK as well ...having some kind of story (much like some of the scenarios those here who see NK as the "mastermind" have suggested) rigged up to make all this look like her idea and, in his version, put the weapon in her hand....maybe he tried to stop her, etc. (in his prepared story). But something misfired, and he didn't kill NK.... And she's got the Minions blanket and the cleaning supplies that he probably touched without gloves...?

Ah, just an idea. Whatever happened, I can't see how he would think the social media would not be tracked...Maybe he thought he could erase all the incriminating traces, but that seems unlikely.

ETA: I wonder if WalMart video will show both DE and NK on their trips...or did someone get sent in while someone waited in the car...

It is hard for me to ignore the pedophile angle. I have known a lot of college aged boys and NONE of them were ever interested in a 13 yr old. That would actually terrify them.

Virginia has the death penalty. And evidently has used it 111 times since it was reinstated according to this website. Pretty sure the Beltway sniper (John Muhammad) was executed there. But, as it stands now, neither DE or NK are charged with capital murder though...

I have not been able to post in two days, but like others, am SO appreciative of those that have. It's kept me in the loop and I've tried to keep up.

Not in the medical field, but does anyone know if an 18 or 19 year old's brain is fully developed to understand consequences, etc. I thought it happened in the early 20s, but I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time lol).
Not that they can't decipher right from wrong, that's not what I'm trying to convey. I guess it would be the immaturity in development, period, that would make them determine so stupidly, "yeah, that's a great plan...no one will know." I was an idiot when I was that age, and everyone I knew was, too. We weren't bad kids, just made some very stupid decisions in college, but we were for the most part bright kids and did well in school.

The brain is not fully developed until at least age 27 and the last parts to develop are the frontal lobe which encompassed executive functioning, critical thinking etc.

looking back, DE could of lied and said he had no idea that NL was so young. Broke it off.........after all he could of quit KIK, changed his code name, NL didn't have her phone during Christmas vacation............why murder?
It was mentioned that there were no classes at VT Jan 4th.........did DE and NK go home for Christmas and come back early?

A couple of thoughts - we don't know that Nicole didn't have access to other wifi devices or a laptop, during the time her phone was taken away, do we? Possibly she used another device to communicate with DE then.

And the winter session started on 1/4. Either one of them could have come back to take a class. And I do think it would be likely that DE would have had to come back early from Christmas break anyway for track practices anyway. Most college athletes I know don't get much in the way of breaks.

I'm curious why many of you think DE might be a pedophile. Don't you think Nicole might have lied about her age?

Although it wasn't confirmed by law enforcement, media had reported that it was rumored that Nicole might have threatened DE to go public about their relationship. I think this might be likely true. In VT there have been instances when students have found themselves in trouble for unknowingly entering into relationships with underage girls.

One event I know was about a graduate student in 20s meeting and dating a girl who said she was 18. After a break up initiated by him, she tells him she is actually 15 and threatens to go the cops. She did go to the cops claiming rape, he was arrested and suspended. There were records of her stating to be 18, being in a consensual relationship and threatening him so the charges were dropped.

More well known example is Marcus Vick (brother of quarterback Michael Vick.) When Marcus was a student at VT and was 19 years old when he and friends have met three girls at a game. Those girls told them they were 18 and went to their house and drank alcohol, had consensual sex. It turned out the girls were 14,15 and 15. The girls have left a sleepover to go to VT and attend a game and met Vick and friends after the game. Marcus Vick was charged with having sexual relations with a 15 yr old and providing alcohol to minors. Sex charges was dismissed eventually (as the girl admitted she lied about her age and refused to testify pleading the 5th) but Marcus was found guilty of misdemeanor.

I imagine Marcus Vick example would be known to DE especially given he is also an athlete.

Have you seen her photos? Even assuming she claimed she was older, how could anyone reasonably believe it? She looked like a child, and all her poses in the photos are very childish. She also apparently liked to hang out with younger kids. She was even younger mentally than her bio age.

Perhaps more will come out. But here in Virginia, they are notoriously tight lipped with many cases until it goes to trial. More may be released, but probably not a lot. This helps when choosing a jury. And then they can't come back and say 'everyone knows all the details as it was released to the public.'

We know NK has a younger sister who looks like NK and also somewhat like little Nicole (facial shape, bone structure) DE also has a younger sister, but I haven't seen any pictures of her. I wonder if she looks similar in any way. I don't know where I'm going with this, but maybe if DE is a pedophile, maybe he had made advances on his own sister previously? (makes me sick to type or think this, and please delete if this comment is not allowed)

She had at least 3 FB pages. On one of them she looked entirely her age and even younger. I will say on the other, she looked older. But I'm not buying that DE thought she was 18 or even 16. I'm sure he knew about 2 if not all of her FB pages.
