Sentence has been commuted to life--wait for the next one to make it 1000.

North Carolina Inmate Becomes 1,000th Executed
By ESTES THOMPSON, AP

Kenneth Lee Boyd shot his wife and father-in-law to death in 1988.
RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 2) - A convicted murderer was put to death Friday in the nation's 1,000th execution since capital punishment resumed in 1977. Kenneth Lee Boyd, 57, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., said state Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Walker. Boyd was convicted of killing his estranged wife and father-in-law in 1988.

His death came after both Gov. Mike Easley and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene and stop the execution. Larger-than-normal crowds gathered at the prison in Raleigh, where prison officials tightened security. Police arrested 16 protesters late Thursday who sat down on the prison's four-lane driveway, officials said. Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry.

US executes 1,000th inmate since landmark ruling

RALEIGH, United States (AFP) - Convicted killer Kenneth Boyd became the 1,000th prisoner to be executed in the United States since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976.

"God bless everybody in here," were the last words uttered by Boyd, 57, to witnesses after he was given lethal injections at the central prison in the North Carolina capital, Raleigh.
Boyd had been on death row for 11 years after being found guilty of the 1988 murders of his estranged wife, Julie, and father-in-law, Thomas Curry.

A Vietnam War veteran with a history of alcohol abuse, Boyd carried out the attack after drinking a huge quantity of beer. According to Amnesty International, Boyd was borderline mentally retarded.

Md. Inmate Executed for 1991 Murder

BALTIMORE — A condemned inmate was executed Monday for the fatal shooting of a woman that was witnessed by her grandchildren at a Baltimore County shopping center in 1991.

Wesley E. Baker, 47, died by injection despite arguments from death penalty opponents who said the state had yet to fully review a 2003 study of capital punishment in Maryland. The report concluded race and geography play roles in how death sentences are meted out in the state.

Baker, a black man convicted of killing a white victim in Baltimore County, fit many of the purported disparities revealed by the study.
