RUSSELL COUNTY, VA (WJHL) - Update:

Russell County Public Schools released an update to the community this evening about an illness that caused officials to close three schools Friday.

The release confirmed that the person who fell ill is an employee of the Russell County School District.

Dr. Melody Counts, Director of the Cumberland Plateau Health District released the following statement:

“A resident of the western region of Virginia has become very ill, and the patient's family, friends and acquaintances are understandably concerned. Virginia Department of Health staff - locally and across the state - are aware of the situation and are investigating. The cause of the illness has not yet been identified.

Preliminary lab results DO NOT indicate that any special precautions are recommended for people who know or had contact with this patient.

what kind of an illness, in one child, can close 3 schools? Odd. We had a student get meningitis and the school didn't close. weird.

Ebola? But I would guess meningitis. TB is making an appearance again.

Sad story.

if it is meningitis why not just tell everyone? people should be aware of the symptoms. It can come on very fast and mimics the flu.

Yeah, very strange way to handle that.
