Culpeper County Sheriff's Office - Timothy W. Chilton
December 18, 2025, marks the 20-year anniversary of a brutal crime in Culpeper County. We are seeking assistance from the public with continuing our investigation and moving forward in the brutal murder of Sheryl Warner in the Reva area of Culpeper County that occurred on December 18, 2005.
This crime left three children without their mother, a sister without her best friend, and parents without their daughter.
On the evening of December 18, 2005, Sheryl Warner was alone at her residence in the 8400 Block of James Monroe Highway. The investigation revealed that Sheryl was on the telephone with her father discussing the ongoing NFL game between the Washington Redskins and the Cowboys, when Sheryl heard a knock at her door. When she answered the door, she advised her father that a vehicle had broken down and an individual wanted to use her phone to call for assistance. After she hung up the telephone, no one had any further communication with Sheryl even though family members were desperately trying to regain communication with her.
Sheryl’s family called the Sheriff’s Office, and deputies responded to the residence. Deputies observed smoke coming from Sheryl’s home, and the fire department responded. Law Enforcement found Sheryl had been hung in the basement and she had also suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The items surrounding Sheryl’s lifeless body had been set on fire, contaminating the crime scene; however, the suspect(s) was unable to destroy all evidence.
Throughout the years, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office has remained dedicated to identifying and bringing to prosecution those responsible for the heinous crime of Sheryl’s murder. With the advance of modern technology, DNA has been developed in this case that is compatible with the comparison to an individual suspect(s).
The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance in the development of a suspect(s) for this individual comparison. The DNA evidence in Sheryl’s homicide is currently not sufficient for an automatic computer comparison in the National Database. As technology improves, we believe this will change.
Currently, there is still an active financial reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of an offender(s). Detectives believe that this case can be solved with the assistance of the community.
If anyone remembers or has any information relating to Sheryl’s homicide, or has any information that may lead to the identification of a suspect(s), please contact Culpeper Sheriff’s Office:
