This NAMUS entry was modified and no longer states that the victim was a 'transient who fell off the train.'

Items/accessories were also updated:
Accessories
Near the Body: Handkerchief Toothpaste tube Toothbrush in cellophane wrapper
In pockets: nailclippers pocketknife $.28 razor cards hankie flashlight
Clothing on the body: Khaki jacket Insulated vest (quilted) Green plaid shirt Undershirt Dungarees w/ brown belt Blue knit longjohns Boxer shorts Two pairs of socks (dark color) Green scarf
Near the Body: Pair of shoes

The fact that the pair of shoes was found *near* the body makes me suspect that he didn't fall off a train, but was maybe residing near the tracks. The amount of inventory around him may also suggest that this was a location more deliberate than one discovered in a fall.

Reconstruction image now available. It looks like this one has blue eyes, which differs from the description.Screenshot 2026-01-11 at 1.42.52 AM.webp

On the NAMUS site it says // Right Eye Color: Brown // Left Eye Color: Brown // but then in the Eye Description it includes "Reports list eyes as brown and gray"

I'm new here, is that typical? Is there a reason the description would say an additional color? (i.e. Is this some sort of a form-based constraint?) I'm inclined to re-write the physical description in a more narrative quality. (I hope that's okay..)

A young man was found deceased on Friday, February 24, 1978. He is a white man, 5'9" and 170 lbs. He was found by railroad tracks in Skippers, VA, about a 10 minute drive from Emporia, VA. On his person were a flashlight, razor, nail clippers, a pocket knife, a hankie, cards and pocket change (about 28¢). Near the young man was a toothbrush wrapped in cellophane, tube of toothpaste, and a handkerchief. He was dressed warmly with two pairs of dark colored socks, blue knit longjohns, undershirt, a green scarf, khaki jacket and insulted quilted vest. He had on boxer shorts, a green plaid shirt and was wearing dungarees with a brown belt. A pair of shoes were found near him. He's believed to be younger than 30 but older than 21 years old. He has brown hair and brown eyes with some gray.

His person was found after the area had experienced a severe blizzard which blanketed the region in 10-20" of snow just a few weeks prior. The day was cold, foggy, and wet.

Your corneas cloud over and turn a dull blue-gray color after death. This can make definitive eye color determination difficult.
