I don't know, but it seems likely that the reason is to televise the plea hearing.
There aren't any document links available to review online for me to actually *see* the MEDIA REQUEST.

*Preliminary Hearing (re Competence) (@ 3pm ET) – VA – Stephen Dale Meek II (2) (Jan. 11, 2019, Christiansburg; sexually abused & blunt force trauma, died Jan. 13, 2019) – *McKenzie Kyle Hellman (25) (BF) arrested (1/13/19) & charge (1/17/19) with felony murder, aggravated sexual battery, inanimate sexual penetration, accessory to forcible sodomy, possession of child & 2 counts of accessory after the fact to product child . Held without bond.
2/28/19 Update: Waiting for autopsy report, preliminary hearing continued to 5/30.
5/30/19 Update: Judge Philip Trompeter ordered that Hellman undergo an evaluation to determine his mental competency to stand trial and also his state of mind at the time of the incidents that prompted the array of charges that he faces. Trompeter scheduled a Sept. 5 review date for the court to receive the results of the evaluation and decide how to proceed.
9/5/19 Update: Hellman's attorneys and the court do not have the mental evaluation report back from the doctor. They said the doctor received information 10 days ago but has not gotten a report together yet for the court. The case will continue in court with a preliminary date of Oct. 24.

Hellman deemed mentally competent to stand trial for 2-year-old's murder

CHRISTIANSBURG — McKenzie Kyle Hellman is mentally competent to stand trial for the beating death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, attorneys said Thursday during a short hearing in Montgomery County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

In May, attorney Fred Kellerman of Christiansburg, who is representing Hellman, requested an evaluation to look into what he said were “profound issues” with Hellman’s mental health. On Thursday, Kellerman and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Cristina Agee said that the evaluation had been completed and Hellman was found to be mentally competent.

Held without bond.
Trial was set to begin on 3/18/20 is now a Plea hearing.
Preliminary hearing on 2/28/19. 2/28/19: Grand jury hearing on 4/9. 4/9/19: Plea hearing on 6/19.
6/19/19 Update: Plea hearing rescheduled for 10/16.
10/16/19 Update: Plea hearing has been delayed again because of Hellman’s competency hearing. Trial delayed to March 18, 2020. Plea hearing has been delayed (again) to 3/18/20 instead of trial.

In light of Covid19, the courts are looking to postpone proceedings -- at least for 21 days.

"If someone is incarcerated and would be sentenced to serve additional time, then we are postponing their case."

"In Montgomery County Circuit Court, a plea hearing for Kayla Nicole Thomas, the mother of slain 2-year-old Steven Dale Meek II, remained on the docket for Wednesday, but Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary Pettitt wrote in an email that she expected attorneys would use the hearing only to reschedule the matter for a later date."
