I really believe he was local and for some reason wasn't reported or the report wasn't taken seriously.

Not necessarily. We've had other cases where the reaction to a missing serviceperson was just a shrug and well, we'll arrest them if we happen to run across them, or something like that. I guess it's a pretty common thing.

Thinking of his age in context too: 40-45....How likely is it for someone that age to have been in active service in 1970?

We're wondering about a Marine going AWOL, but wouldn't someone that age have already completed his service?I know now we tend to think of being in your 40s as still pretty young, but looking back a couple of generations he would have been thought of a bit more as an older man. Mature, at least. Just something I think we should consider. Opinion only.
