VA - Woman arrested after multiple babies suffer fractures at same hospital, Henrico County - 2023, 2024

Such shocking cruelty described in the Daily Mail article that I had to stop reading. Horror at what the poor, tiny defenseless infant was subjected to, and also imagining the worried parents of the premature baby catching some sleep at home, comforted by the fact that their baby was safe and cared for in a NICU unit. Just horrifying.

Bbm.
Almost as if the hospital is saying a procedure is at fault, and maybe not the suspect ??
This makes zero sense.
What procedure or policy could possibly cause broken bones ?
Omo.
I asked this question to Chat GPT and here is the answer I received:

In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the infants are extremely fragile, and while all measures are taken to ensure their safety and health, certain necessary medical interventions might carry a risk, however small, of causing bone fractures. Here are a few procedures and situations in the NICU that might lead to broken bones:

  1. Handling and Positioning: Premature and very low birth weight infants have extremely delicate bones that are more susceptible to fractures. Accidental fractures can occasionally occur during routine handling, repositioning, or while carrying out necessary medical procedures.
  2. Intravenous Line Insertion: The insertion of intravenous lines is a common NICU procedure required for administering medication or nutrition. If not done carefully, this can lead to fractures, particularly in the most fragile bones such as the ribs or clavicles.
  3. Respiratory Support and Management: Mechanical ventilation and other forms of respiratory support involve equipment that might need to be secured to the infant. Improper placement or excessive pressure from straps or other securing devices can potentially lead to fractures.
  4. Chest Compressions: In cases where neonatal resuscitation is required, chest compressions are performed. Given the fragility of neonatal bones, particularly the ribs, this life-saving procedure can sometimes result in fractures.
  5. Use of Forceps or Vacuum during Delivery: If the neonate was delivered using assistive devices like forceps or a vacuum extractor, this could lead to fractures at birth, which may be diagnosed and treated in the NICU.
NICU staff are highly trained to minimize any harm and handle infants with the utmost care to avoid these risks as much as possible. Regular training and adherence to strict protocols are essential to ensure the safety of these vulnerable patients.

“In a statement Tuesday, Henrico police refuted theories shared on social media that all the infants targeted were Black.

‘The preliminary investigation indicates this information is not factual,’ police said. Hackey agrees.

‘The children were different races, and there were twins and singletons,’ he said. “There was no real methodology there that we can put together. The only thing they have in common is that they are all boys.’”

Most of them were black though...
I just can't believe this. I hope all the babies grow up with healed bones and no permanent issues from these horrible assaults!

Just wanted to add this here, regarding a Nurse’s avocation.

After my just departed mother in law’s death early this month her funeral service was held this week. She was a retired nurse after over forty years as a nurse in our local hospital. And so touching….. towards the end of her service, in honor of her profession and service, the local hospital Nurse Honor Guard where she worked did a ‘Nurse’s Last Call to Duty’ or ‘Nurse’s Last Call of Duty’. It is a tribute to her service, and honor and remembrance too of Florence Nightingale. Four current nurses with brief statements and testimony and a ringing of a small open triangle bell. And there is a lighting and extinguishing of a candle lit lamp. So touching and moving…… and sure to wet an eye.

After again thinking of this individual in this thread conduct and behavior……. (I am not calling her a nurse, sorry)……. contrasted with other honorable nursing service…… simply shaking my head.

And as I write to honor my late mother in law, complete this with wet eyes.

Love you mom! ❤️ I’ll miss you helping me read my blood work results too.

Here is a Veterans Administration link and details on the Florence Nightingale Tribute and Nurse Honor Guard if of interest:

They knew since Sunmer of 2023, and did nothing. The circumstances of the recent fractures are similar to incidents involving four different babies at the hospital in the summer of 2023, according to a statement from HCA, which runs Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Awful hospital.
Respectfully, on the surface anyways it seemed they tried. They did suspend 5 people for a year and tried to figure out what had happened. They caught her when they came back and they had cameras everywhere. I feel like they did their best because these are hard cases to figure out. But we don't know all the background - when the precious incidents where, if there was suspicion for awhile and nothing was done, etc...

IMO absolutely they need to consider the possible racial issue.
Nasty, horrifying monster.

You're supposed to be able to trust the people in care of your precious babies. :(
Smh.

It's a shame that cameras are needed, but this and other cases prove they are. If the cameras had been there fron the start, and nurses were told they were being filmed, maybe someone like this suspect would have controlled her worst impulses.

This is local to me, but like @tlcya , I have hesitated to comment I've been so angry.
At first, I thought it might be caused from a procedure (I asked my sister, an RN, BS, who worked in OB for almost 30 years). Found out there are things pediatricians do to "test" and assess babies at birth, but these things are usually not done by nurses. Also, since it was multiple babies, it was obvious someone was either horrifically undertrained, or doing it on purpose.

I have mixed feelings about the hospital. They attempted to find the problem, and even CPS investigated...the problem was no one could pin the abuse on one particular nurse, hence the multiple suspensions. Yet, I also see some CYA on the hospital's behalf.

One last thought--this could've had horrible repercussions for the parents or other nurses. Suppose they had been charged with child abuse and lost their careers, or worse, their children, over something that was not at all their fault?

Ugh. Substance abuse absolutely can break down normal barriers in behavior and cause psychosis. A medical professional responsible for vulnerable infants should never engage in it.

Her being bipolar also may have made her unfit for duty if she was in a manic phase without treatment.

Exactly. And the parents worried as they were at least felt they could sleep at night safe in the knowledge that NICU professionals were on the case.
The reports of her bending back the male infant's legs and forcing them to his head and him writhing in pain, and that she had broken his thigh bone was very, very hard to read.

Feb. 12, 2025

On Wednesday, she was granted a $25,000 bond with terms that include house arrest with her parents and wearing a GPS monitor.

She is also not allowed to be in the presence of minors or vulnerable adults or provide care to them.

Additional stipulations to Strotman’s bond include her submitting to periodic drug and alcohol tests, not having any contact with her boyfriend, and not leaving her parents’ house for anything other than court-approved appointments. She is also barred from soliciting or providing any health care services to anyone.

The judge also ordered Strotman’s parents to remove all guns from their home before she could be released.

“They have now sworn under oath that, yes, they do have firearms, and yes, they will be removed prior to their daughter coming to their home, and we will ensure that that will be followed up on,” Taylor said.

Taylor added that her office is continuing to investigate and more charges could be forthcoming in March when the next grand jury meets.
