Circumstances of Recovery Unidentified remains recovered by fishing vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. Body appears to have been previously autopsied and possibly embalmed. Partial extremities missing, likely due to postmortem scavenging by aquatic life. The remains were received without clothing or personal effects.

Maybe his remains were unearthed by a hurricane? Othram had a case like that a year or two ago, iirc.
Edit to add: Hurricane Diana hit that area about a month before he was found.

If not embalmed, could this be a burial at sea? Not sure the legality of that in the 80s.

Just did some research and off of Ocracoke Island in NC has suitable depth for burial at sea. State laws vary, but some do not require a licensed funeral director to oversee burial.


I wonder how much this possibility was explored at the time, and if records were even kept of burials at sea.
